What you'll need to do is to cut as close to the rock as possible. I've read this can be done by gently tilting the clam to one side and use an old credit card to cut it at the base.
I wouldn't use a credit card might pull to much.....Just get a regular razor blade and that will make quick work of it....Byssal threads are just like our fingernails. Clam won't feel a thing unless you cut to close to the clam and then you run the risk of killing it......
