removing an anemone nicely

hey guys, i work at a pet store and the aquatics guys always stick anemones on huge pieces of live rock when they come in. today (for the 2nd time) i tried to get an anemone out (this time a bubble tip) but stopped because he was on there really good and i didn't want to tear his basal disk. today the customer said he'd come back tomorrow because the piece of live rock (which he offered to buy) was too big for any of our bags!!

for those LFS owners, where do you guys put your anemones when they come in and how do you get them off in a nice way that you could do in front of customers; since i think it might be weird wrenching it off with a credit card or putting ice to it in front of people who want to buy it.

please help, I'm exasperated and I would hate to hurt them!!

Try putting ice on the foot. Ive used a credit card when the foot was stuck to glass....

when i was acclimating my blue carpet it attached its self to the bottom of the bucket i put on a pair of latex gloves and i just used my thumb and massaged his foot he came off after a few minutes of doing it his foot is pretty big too - that might help just my 2 cents on this

I have always seen them on the glass in my LFS. If you must use ice just explain it to the customer.

I think using ice in front of a customer is very acceptable. Probably wrenching it off with a credit card looks a lot worse.

Is it possible to not have big pieces of LR in the tank with your bta's? In my LFS, they don't really have much besides some small rubble pieces in their tank with the BTA's. It's way easier to peel a nem off of glass with a credit card than wrench, pull, peel, and maybe damage the anemone trying to have it let go from a rock.

do stores usually put them in with just sand and no live rock so they go on the glass by default?

My LFS has sand and rock rubble in their tanks with the nems and no rocks. Its a lot easier to just pick them up with the rubble. So yes, that seems to be so they just go to the glass. *shrug*

the one fish store i sometime goto theyre nems are always in this tank that has about 10-15 tanks in it and they all are very small its where they usually keep all theyre inverts

another place i goto has theyre nems in reg nice sized tanks with sand and lr ( this is the store i acctually bought my blue carpet from )

another store has one of thoes hudge square tanks display for all theyre corals and what not i usually find the nems in thoes holding tanks


so really it all verys on the place you goto - i got really worryed when the guy was trying to get the blue carpet out of the tank because the carpet did not like him 1 bit haha it attached its self to him- took a couple mins for the nem to get off the rock he was on and what not the guy massaged the foot but in process got him self stuf to the nem lol

I'm not sure why you would through the nem in with large pieces of LR? Unless you were hoping to get the customer to go home with a big rock LOL

My LFS puts all anenomes in plastic floating baskets....
they cannot attach to anything in the tank....

I never paid much attention to the containers so I cannot give detail but....

thats how they do it..

I've seen stores that put their nems in with rocks and I've seen ones that don't. I've also seen the guys at the store break apart rocks because they can't get the anemone off.

Personally, I'd put them in a tank with live sand and rubble. It will cause much less stress when you are trying to bag them up for a new home.
