removing internal overflows

Hey all, haven't posted in a while, kinda got out of the hobby for a couple years, have a question on internal overflows, my tank is a 8 foot 180 dual corner overflow tank and I really want to remove them to increase tank space, guess my question is, if I remove the baffle parts and just run standpipes will I lose surface skimming to the extent of it causing problems. ?? Thanks for any insight on this..

You could run standpipes up, then step up fitting sizes at the top with a 2" opening. I believe Gary M. has elbows leading to his drains (no overflow per se), and look at his results.

one of THOSE questions, eh? :spin2:

it depends.

But in all likelyhood the answer to your question is NO.

I've been running with standpipe drains for over a decade.

I removed the larger fittings several weeks ago. I have two 1.5" drainpipes handling everything and when tested, ONE of those drains handled everything nicely!

(Awesome sound when I removed the plumbing!)

Thanks Gary that's all I needed to here... just finished pulling both out of the corners and I have to say, I'm loving the openness and gained 6 square feet of room. !!

What do you replace it with? Anyone have a picture?

No pictures here yet, but if you know what a derso stand pipe is, its like havinig those with NO overflows in front of them.. picture a pipe going from the bottom of the tank to the water surface with nothing around it.. much easier to hide and give you much more space

Hey man! I was in your neck of the woods last hunting season. Was wondering if you were still around. Hope all is well!

Happy to hook you up with frags when you're ready. Still owe you for that Rubbermaid stock tank you gave me a couple years back.
