Okay,

I am running out of time, money, patience, etc.

I have decided that I just don't have the time for my 46 gallon tank at the moment. What I would like to do is get a smaller tank, maybe a 12 gallon nano or something similar with a metal halide light, pendant preferred or LEDs. I will transfer a couple of pieces of my live rock to that tank and keep the corals I really like and then sell the rest of the rock, corals, tank, stand, lights, etc.

While not in a huge hurry for the change, the sooner the better. Could y'all keep your eyes out for a tank like what I'm looking for? I'm watching craig's list as well.

Maybe you could win a nano at the swap. You probably do not want to wait that long. Hopefully, we will have some great raffle prizes like that again this year. If Don has not decided on a sea horse tank, his tank may be for sale. I do not want either of you folks out of the hobby, though.:sad2:

I'll be selling my 14g rimless AIO w/150w halide and stand once I buy and setup a larger tank.
But I've been saying that for months - who knows when it will happen? Maybe I can get my stuff together here over spring break.

I know the guy at 5th day in chattanooga had a 12 and a 24 nano, no stand and the lights were PC but I think he was asking 50 and 80 respectively for the tank (Don't quote me on that). He might still have them if you wanted to check with him. At that kind of price you could then buy light and stand. If I see anything else I'll let you know.

Heh. It looks like you are headed the same route I did last a couple years back.

I would recommend you look for a 24G nano -- the lights won't cost much more and it is fairly easy to take care of. I would recommend whichever size you buy, you add an auto-topoff to keep the water more stable (and make for less work).

P.S. One of these days we need do a meeting where we group buy all the components of an auto top-off, bring them to the meeting, and have an education/assembly time. I'd be happy to lead if we have interest in this.

The Bulk Reef Supply all-in-one DIY ATO kit is super easy and pretty cheap (like $40). That would be a good option.

It's easier than the ATO that Gary built at a meeting just over a year ago since there is no soldering involved and such (though his was even cheaper). His parts list and instructions are/were on our website.

I can make one superior to that that has an interposing relay and backup high level switch and receptacle with alternating ports (one for top-off and one for recirc) for less than $50 (small pump included).

Thanks for the understanding guys. I don't want out of the hobby completely, I just need to downsize a little.

I was thinking a 24 gallon AIO would be ideal as well. Think a 150 watt MH would be okay for that or would the smaller MH (70w?) be okay as well?

Whatever you do...avoid the Biocube if you can. The ballasts have gone out in numerous ones that I've seen. However...have you seen those 28g nanos that have an HQI? There's two kinds...JBJ and Oceanic (same people who make Biocube). They're pretty cool.

It just depends on if you want to keep sps or not, really. You can do a lot with a 12 or 28g PC cube but not much in the way of SPS. I swear someone needs to come out with a small nano that has real T5s in it.

I'm looking at a used Biocube 24 with a 150 watt metal halide pendant with it. No biocube hood. I would like to keep my softies, lps and an sps or two. I think this would do it. And be enough smaller that my upkeep would be less. Water changes would be more manageable, etc.

What do y'all think?
