Repainting a stand with an established reef still on it?

Hello all,

My mother is pushing me to repaint my aquarium stand (It turns out she didn't like the color that she picked out initially). Problem is, I have an established reef still atop the stand... Can I paint (rolling and brushing, not spray) the aquarium stand with the tank still on it? In case this helps, its a 130 gallon acrylic with overflows and sump. Any input? I'm worried that this may be bad for my reef system.

The two coats would be:

- ZINSSER Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Primer for all surfaces. It is Mold & Mildew Resistant, and rust inhibitive.

- Velspar semi-gloss paint

If anyone has done this before successfully, please let me know. If you know this is a horrible idea, please let me know that as well! Thanks :)

Not a problem. Years ago my wife hated the color she picked out so I repainted the stand. In fact a month later she changed her mind again and I repainted a again.

I used a fan to draw the fumes away from the tank.

Are you planning on going right over the existing or do you need to sand first? If no sanding is needed - I agree with mikeatjac's reply. Open windows if weather permits.

No sanding is needed, so I guess I'm good to go! A fan to draw the fumes away is a great idea. Its in a sun room, so the "fresh air" factor is not a problem, considering 3 out of 4 walls is all windows that I can open. Plus, I live in the south. It's still getting to a comfortable 70 degrees during the day here, so temperature is not a problem either. Thanks for the replies!
