I have two BTA's in my 120 reef tank. Believe it or not, I had a Ocellaris pair and a maroon pair hosted in each BTA. Unfortunately over the last month, brooklynella took them all out. After my tank is clean, I would like to replace the clowns. I thing that I was very luck having mixed pairs like that and don't intend to try to repeat that. Which clownfish would be best in a community tank with a GBTA and RBTA?

I really like the gold stripped maroons, but I like the ocellaris as well. Any advice as far as possible starting with a young set of each in one aquarium. I already have 2 two year old BTA's in there that currrently have no clowns. I would like to put two varities in there if they will be compatible. So say "no way". Others are saying it is OK if introduced young and at the same time. Opinions?

your tank is just not big enough for 2 pairs of clowns to coexist peacefully for any kind of long term arrangement.
Eventually there will be deaths. Pick one.

I had two pairs that got along fine for quite a while. But, I do think that was just luck with that pair. I have two BTAs. If I put a pair in one and a single in the other, perhaps that will work for a while..at least until the single turns into a female. Any thoughts there? I don't want to leave the BTA without a clown.

It's not like you can guarantee that one set of clowns will go to one anemone and the other clown will take up residence in the second nem...afaic the life of your livestock isn't a thing you should gamble on.

I wonder if there is one varity of clowns that would coexist in the two BTA's, with perhaps one pair and a second individual? I know that the potential problem is that a single individual will turn into a female. Two of those on one tank is a problem. Maybe the more docile types, like Percs or Ocellaris will work?

i voted maroons because they will host the BTA. i had two oceallaris that wouldn't even look at my BTA. so i replaced them with maroons. plus true percs may or may not host a BTA. good luck!!

Thanks for that. I had two Ocellaris in a BTA for several years but that is a definite chance as you say.
I am hesitating on the maroons as they become so aggressive. I have a dozen other fish in the tank that I wouldn't want stressed out, or killed

Any one of them may or may not host a BTA, you know?

I think it would be easier to find the clowns YOU like best for personality, and just play the waiting game on the hosting. It should happen eventually.

Best of luck!

I voted for perc myself. I have a male goldstriped maroon who is quite fiesty since his mate passed. She kept him in line I guess.
:-P

Percs and Ocellaris are not naturally drawn to BTA's, even though I've had a pair in mine for several years. Some of the others might find it easier. I have 2 BTA's in there, now there is the problem. I want to have a clown(s) in each, but that may lead to fighting. I am leaning towards Ocellaris and Percs for that reason. I plan to start with 5 small ones and see how they gravitate to the BTA's and/or pair off.

Why do you think they are not there anymore?
I think any clown pair would be fine, just know the temperament of the clown you keep. In a 120 g tank, they will be fine even if they are aggressive in protecting their anemone.
I have keep three clowns with Skunk, Ocellaris and Percula before. They will survive (long term like 7+ years) but the third clowns is harassed on the daily basis but the other two. I would not want to do that again. My three Ocellaris is still living at the LFS display tank where I bring them when my tank crashed.
