Replacement for QO4000 pump

I've currently got a Quiet One 4000 as a return pump that I'm just about feed up with. I'm looking at the Eheim pumps, but am curious if anyone can recommend a pump in the 1000-1200 GPH range other than the Eheim? I know everyone raves on the Eheim pumps, but the largest one at DRS F&S is $170 and only pumps 900GHP.

Sorry, I guess I should have mentioned, I'm running this inside the sump, don't currently have the option for an external pump.

I would consider a Danner Mag-Drive 12 then...I really like the 9.5 I have, I based the purchase off of forum reviews...

You know, I completely wasn't even thinking about the Mag-Drive pumps, I have a 3 and a 5 in my water mixing setups and have NEVER had a hiccup out of either. The 12 is almost right on the money flow wise, and for just a few bucks more I can go with an 18 and use it to feed a frag tank, if I decide to go that route one day. I've heard some people complain about heat, but I run T5s and the tank is in a basement so I don't have any heat issues.

I have run seversl MAG's and they do run fine, however I found the excessive heat they generate a big downpoint. My mag 9.5 raised my 180 several degrees. Plus they were all noisy with lots of vibrations. I guess being for Ponds really Danner didn't worry too much abut those aspects.

I have tried one the ECO pumps (1500gph) and it is doing fine thus far. Theya re reasonable as well. You might try one of those.

Interesting, I can almost not hear my Mag 9.5 sitting in the acrylic sump, the skimmer pump, a Sicce PSK-2500, vibrates more (but the pump platform might be the culprit)...and I run T5s on a 90 gal tank, and my heater has to keep the water temp up...

I run the Mag 9.5 also and I love it. The only problem I have is the noise. It is a little noisy, but I believe that is due to the way it is setup. I don't really have a heat issue though. I did not notice the temp rising until I added Metal Halides to the tank. Regardless, they make a killer pump that has a few small drawbacks. I would give it a 4 out of 5 *****

My only complaint with Mags is heat and noise, but if I recall the bigger pumps are not as bad in comparison to other pumps in their output range when it comes to the heat. Mine always rattle a bit.

And Eheims are a bit expensive, but damn they are bulletproof.

In any case, it sounds like your experience with Quiet Ones are about like my experience. And if that's what you're using now, I don't think a Mag will be much worse (if at all) when it comes to heat or noise.

Heat isn't a problem, and quite frankly, my overflow is (currently) less then ideal and quite noisy, so noise isn't that big of a deal. The stupid hangon power filter on my crappy freshwater tank is WAY louder then anything else in the room anyway.

Andy, can you post some information on the Eco pump? The only thing I'm turning up is MaxiJet modifications and concrete pumps! haha. thanks

They are the ones the critter repalced the QO's with. They are cheaper than the QO.
