S. gigantea seems to have such a low affinity to adapting to life in captivity that despite that the cost of one to purchase may not be too bad, there are so few that "make it" compared to those that don't, that it would indeed take a feat of bravery to attempt slicing-n-dicing. I had to wait 4 years (4 years! Seriously.) of checking the LFS's for a gigantea to come in, before I found one, so I just don't have the bravery to try it. Basically, if I lose the ones I've got, there's no replacing them.
Strangely, I haven't observed a spawning event with mine in a while. "He" used to spawn fairly regularly, corresponding to the equinoxes (give or take a week or two). Could be coincidence on the timing, but I'm thinking it may be a factor.
The other times where he's spawned out of season have corresponded to an event that reduced the dissolved O2 in the water. For example, a prolonged power failure that saw the tank flatlined for >12 hours, or running red slime remover (running red slime remover typically involves disabling your skimmer for a few days, but the red slime remover itself will reduce the O2 levels in the tank - or so it says on the package, anyhow).

Would you mind sharing how to get your H.mag to spawn? I am curious about all this and will follow along.
