Rescue of Sustainable Aquatics captive raised Oxymoncathus longirostris

Very cool. She seems to definitely be very interested in the food so you are providing her with just what she needs to pull through. Good luck and keep this thread updated daily.

Shes definitely thicker today. But she's got some funk on her fins. Her dorsal is degraded somewhat which is impeding her swimming. Hopefully she'll shed the damaged areas and regrow them quickly. Also, the male is really giving her a hard time at feeding. He actually grabbed her tail with his mouth today. I may move her back to the qt if it continues now that she's eating.

I wonder if these guys need harems? From what I've read of other filefish, they tend to pair off, but who knows with the OSFFs.

Alien -- definitely separate the male+female if the male is biting the female and leaving marks on body or fins. Files tend to get "fuzz" (lympho? I don't know) on the damaged areas of their fins if they're stressed, and once the fuzz takes hold, they don't heal quite right - there will often be scars.

Thanks for the tips, treylane. She has improved significantly. Just a little fuzz on the spike left. Still putting on weight. Haven't seen the male be as aggressive since. Maybe he was sensing her weakness.

Monkey, all reports I've read of observations in the wild suggest pairs. That doesn't mean that's best in a tank however. At least they're easy to catch.

Female is looking much better today and definitely gaining weight and vigor. I'll try to post some pics soon. It's quite great!

You can see the last remnants of the fin funk shedding off here as she feeds. She's totally clean now.

A quick update. The female continues to improve. Her fins and skin are totally clear. She has great energy and eats everything the male and my previous female ate with great vigor. It's getting harder to tell her from the male without checking the pelvics.

Another in my series of "Blaire Fish Project" videos.

Thanks. Here's one more little vid for those who simply can't get enough baby blue fish with orange spots.

great story, thank you for the videos. I hope she continues to thrive in your care.

Thanks guys. Yeah, the lightening bolt spike is kind of awesome. She was raised in captivity by sustainable aquatics. I kind of imagine it was damaged and regrew.

She's more bold with my male than my previous female. Doesn't take as much guff.

I hope to have them spawn some day.

That's so great to see (your tank is gorgeous, BTW). She even posed between matching colors (anemone and anthelia). ;) And I hope my BTA does as well as yours when my system is finally ready for it!
