rescue scolymia

Hey everyone! I need some advice with a rescue coral i got 3 days ago. Its a scolymia and the guy at the lfs told me it was damaged during the shipping. I put it in my tank at a darker no flow area and i tried to feed it. Its barely moving its mouth, looks like the tissue is pierced by the skeleton. So is most of the outer parts. What else can i do to save it? Im adding amino acids etc.. frequently, waterparameters are ideal. Any thoughts? Can't upload pictures.. im online with my smartphone.. thank you

Low light & low flow are best during recovery. It is a photosynthetic coral so some nutrition is coming from the lights, so a completely shaded location isn't good. Even a 100% healthy scoly will do best in low light IME.

Feeding is key. IME the feeding tentacles only come out at night, usually several hours after the lights go out. So check late at night. Chopped meaty foods like lysis shrimp are ideal if the animal can take them. If it's a week response, don't overfeed - it's best to feed a little less but more frequently during the recovery period. If response is very weak with only antes feeding tentacles showing, spraying the tentacles with small foods like cyclopseeze or similar may be in order. If you see no tentacles out, turn off the pumps late at night (set the alarm!) and while the water is still, place a few mysid shrimp on it and see if it responds. Maybe even scent the water prior to feeding with the water used to thaw out the mysis cube. I think the chances of success are lower with artificial pellet food so I recommend trying frozen.

Someone once told me to eliminate any night time ambient light your house may have during a recovery period...street lamps outside etc. Never needed to try this myself however. Good luck & welcome to RC.

On, forgot to suggest checking out the "Rescue" thread on this forum. It's excellent. Lots of ideas & inspiration. Also if you see exposed skeleton with algae or grunge growing on it, a cleaning procedure is in order. I did this once in a successful recovery effort.

Thank you! I checked out the rescue corals before i registered here! It already respondes a bit to the treatment. Im just worried about the skeleton piercing trough the tissue? Some people advice to remove all sharp spikes, so the coral can pull back again! I really dont know what to do.. dont want to make it worse!

You're welcome. I wouldn't remove the spikes. I've never heard of this but it sounds counter productive. With good positioning in the tank and regular feeding, the tissue is likely to "puff up"'and then expand. Glad your scoly is on the mend.

I like the Fauna Marin LPS pellets. I feed them to my Scoly and I found it to really be beneficial. I cut up a soda bottle top, drilled in holes for flow, and mount it around the Scoly. After I drop in the pellets, I close the cap to keep my shimp from stealing the food.

The frozen food is better than the pellets for sure. A mixed variety ion pellets and frozen I s a good way to go. Either way...the cut up soda bottle can be utilized to keep other tank mates from stealing food.

Reef frog would you happen to know of a link to the cleaning procedure you reference. I've tried manual removal before and thought it was more harmful than beneficial. Thank in advance.
