Resplendent Anthias

Have had a recent positive experience with these fish (in contrast to a less positive one with a group of evansi) that I thought I'd share. Bought 6 females and 1 male. A number of weeks in QT where I fed them almost continuously, now a little over one week in the display.





All seven have now appeared in and around the large plating monti. They are gradually getting more bold and seem to have been 'adopted' by the sub-male Bartlett.

My two resplendents (2 males?) are also doing well in a much smaller aquarium, and are ravenous feeders, although still a bit skittish in the new tank...

Nice. Yes they are nice, little anthias that are peaceful and usually stay fairly close to each other
I was going to go with a shoal of those, but they were out at the wholesalers so I picked up some carbyerri and paravirustis. The carbyerri are in the DT and doing well together.

I find most fish shoal more when they feel threatened than not. Right now this group is pretty tight, though that may change as they get more comfortable.

they're good to accept pellets and look awesome. imo they keep shaol while the dom male patrols alone

these were what i had for 1.5 yrs. the sub was kept bullied by the dom

the dom male kept patrolin in his territory

Randall's and Resplendent anthias may be the same thing too (i.e. a location-specific variant)...

I've kept both, I think. Females indistinguishable. Male Randalls is a bit more colorful. This group were sold to me as Resplandents, but who knows for sure.

They have interesting social behavior. If you have a large group, likely two males will emerge and each male "herds" his females. Excellent species.

That's an interesting observation. In my group of 7 there's a clear male and 4 females. But 2 of them look like they're in transition - but have been that way for 10 weeks without moving to full males. Sub males I guess?

Waaay too many fish, probably. Five tangs, couple of dwarf Angels, trio of pyramids, chalk bassletts, PjCardinals, a few others, bimac and Bartlett anthias. Had bought 4 princess from Hot Reefs; only 2 ate and they're in the display too. Still looking skinny though they are eating.

Male resplendent 'beached' himself on the top of one of my overflow covers (now remedied), but otherwise remaining six are thriving along with the pair of Smithies. I've decided I really like the latter so when/if I see good stock at my LFS I may try to augment the population.

Now that is has been 2 years, any update on your resplendent/randalls anthias?

1. Do they still shoal somewhat together? At least more together than most other anthias do?

2. Have any of them started taking pellets?

I'd forgotten about this thread. My group stabilized at 5 prior to my recent tank move and only three made it through the move. I have found these fish to not be particularly good feeding competitors in a community tank. The three that remain are the ones that were the most aggressive of the group. Never have taken pellets or flakes. They mostly eat smaller fare like calanus, brine and the small hikari mysis. The three definitely do stick together.
