Retro reflector question

I've got Lumenmax elite HQI reflectors. Does it matter if the reflectors are hung with the HQI bulb parallel to the front of the tank or perpendicular? The way you remove the glass is kind of messed up IMO. If you mount them such that the bulbs are parallel to the front of a tank like traditional fixtures, you can't slide the glass lens out to change the bulb without removing the entire reflector. But, if I mount them sort of backwards, then I can slide the glass out from the front and change the bulb, BUT the bulbs would then be perpendicular to the front of the tank. Irritating design if you ask me.

I think hanging them "sideways" will actually be perfect for your DD aquarium. I wouldn't hesitate at all to do it.

The reflectors are symetrical, so I wouldn't think it would make a significant difference. But just for argument's sake, does light emit in different patterns depending on SE or DE?

My guess is DE bulbs give off a more symetrical pattern of light.

And for the record...what a crappy design. I mean most people have tanks up against walls, or reflectors in canopies. I don't get why you'd want to pull the glass out towards the side or back? I'd think a front exit would be the best design. It's not like it's bulkier or unsightly. Silly Germans.....

No, it's basically a point-source of light surrounded by reflective surfaces. The arrangement of light waves isn't different from different parts of the reflectors.

I'd rotate it anti-clockwise 36 degrees for the optimal spectral diffusion. Adjust the angle based on the salinity of your water though if it is higher oe lower brix.

Great article. I understood about 30% of it. But the pictures are purdy.....and I get the point.

Once again, Thanks Walter.

Maybe I'd better just turn this construction project over to you and take it back over once the water is actually in there......

I work cheap...
