Return Pump question and Herbie Drain Set up

Hello,

I'm just getting back into the hobby, and had a Red Sea Reefer 250 when I got out. They use a similar drain like a Herbie with their system.

I ordered a Deep Blue 65 Gallon Corner Drilled Tank which will be here Thursday. I don't know they size yet of the holes pre drilled in the weir.

I also ordered this sump :

I ordered a Bubble Magus Curve 5 skimmer as well:

I'm thinking of 3x to 5x flow rate through the sump, and make up the difference with power heads.

Tank will be fish only with a few LPS.

I will be setting up the Herbie with the 2 lines in the Weir as the drain and emergency, and running the return up over the back of the tank.

Here are my questions:

Return line 3/4" or 1" then drop down to 3/4" at the nozzle ?

If the tank comes with 1" drain and 3/4" drain , which one would I use for the siphon?

Also any suggestions on a return pump ? When I got out I was using a Eheim compact 3000+ but that's discontinued and a Jebao I used in the past as well.

I was looking at some pumps, like the Sicce Syncra 3.0 , it says it has 502 GPH at 5' headloss:

Any suggestions would be apprecaited

Doesn't matter a whole lot. I would just go with the size of the outlet on the return pump the whole way.

Use the larger pipe for the emergency

That would be a good one to use, imo.

To adjust the flow, you would have to install a ball or gate valve on the output side of it. A lot of folks do that, and it does not harm the pump in any way.

I can't help you much with DC pumps.

Agreed, it’s not going to mater much for the return line size, but 3/4” is plenty big. Again a 3/4” line for the primary full siphon drain is your best option and the 1” as the emergency. I would consider upsizing your return pump a little so you can run a carbon, GFO or other reactors off your main return pump rather than needing to add more pumps to your system.
