Drain and Return question

Quick question - setting up a "œpreowned tank" that has two 1/2" drilled holes and one 1 1/2" drilled holes should I have two 1/2 drains or one 1 1/2 drain the others will be returns. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

in that case, i would probably run my returns through the 2x1/2" holes, and leave the 1.5" as a drain.

1/2 inches as drains wouldn't flow too much water, and could be prone to clogging. i ran 3x3/4" drains on my small cube a while back, and even those were problematic.

IMHO, your drain line should never be smaller than 1". Larger if possible. You will never regret having a drain that can handle more than your return pump can put out. If it can't, you will, eventually, overflow the tank.

What size tank is it anyway? As returns, 1/2" are fairly restrictive anyway.

Maybe some pictures to help us help you figure things out?

It is a 50 gallon cube. Three holes 2- 1/2 and 1 1/4. Hard to take a picture but they go like this 1/2 - 1 1/4 - 1/2.
