Return pump recommendations ?

On a ten gallon with a ten gallon sump I'm currently using a Maxijet 1200 (300gph) as a return pump with a Hydor Oscillator as a wavemaker. The tank is LPS so I don't need a bunch of flow, about 30% more (400 gph) would be perfect. Also the pump has to fit in a space just under 4" wide and be submersible. Current return is 1/2" vinyl tubing

I'm considering the Hagen 70 at 400 gph .

The mags suck a lot of juice compared to it's output. I'm afraid the excess would result in too much heat in the tank. 45watts for the Mag5 vs 20 watts for the Hagen.

The Maxijet is a powerhead and shouldn't even work in this application. With the height and elbows it's at maximum head now.

I am using a maxi-jet 1200 as a retrun pump on my 30g. I only wanted about 150-200gph, but I am below 150gph. The 1200 is lifting the water about 3 ft. I am switching to a Quiet One 1200 http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=9849 . Rated for the same flow at 0 ft as the maxi-jet but does a much better job at 3ft. Did some tests with Quiet One 1200 and the flow increase was noticeable and the waterlevel in my overflow increases about 3/4" to compensate for the increased flow. I am going to be setting it up external but it has attachments for submersible or inline. Pump is very quiet even when connected inline externally.

I have been using a Quiet One 4000 in my pond for aver a year and it works flawless and quiet. I also plan to use a 4000 for the closed loop on my 75g I am in the process of setting up. I have a lot of good things about these pumps.

The quiet one looks like a good choice but is probably more flow than I want. It would be a good choice for a larger or sps tank though.

Agu,

I would tend to err on more flow and install a bypass back to the sump as this is also a handy way to add a carbon/phos/water change hose/etc

For a 20 gallon long tank that hopes to host pipe fish some day, what kind of gph do think i would be looking for? I am assuming it will be a little less but i have heard more than a few people say that pipes dont mind a good dose of current as long as there are some slow spots.

How did the 70 work for you. I posted a question about this in the equip forum and got no love. I want a slow flow through the sump on my 20H (Drilled with external overflow - all DIY). I have LPS also but plan on using a Quiet One 3000 and a SCWD for a CLS. The hagen 70 is exactly what I was thinking. I have 2 302's in my display now and they are bullet proof. In there for three years and never even had to clean them.

Before ordering it I asked what the output size was and was told it's 5/8". I also ordered some 3/4" clamps but was told I'd need 5/8 so I ordered those instead. The inside diameter of the output is close to 5/8", but the outside is less than 3/4. The 3/4" tubing was a loose fit and the 5/8" clamps were too small . Apparently the output is a metric size.......

Since this was to be used as a return pump I didn't want the cheap thrill of wondering when the tubing was going to come loose, so I sent it back.

Bummer. I have absolutely no clue if the sizing would work but you could possibly get one of those grey plastic fittings (1/2" to 3/4" barbed) and drill the 1/2" side to the proper dimension and secure it with plastic welder epoxy to the output on the 70. There probably wouldn't be much meat left on the drilled side but its not like it will be a high pressure set up. Just a thought
