I've seen postings about a 1" drain being able to deliver a maximum of 900-1000 gph. I don't know what the alleged max for a 3/4" hole is.
The RC flow calculator shows a 1.01" drain hole being necessary for 600 gph.
My overflow has a 1" drain and my return pump is rated around 900 gph but it has to push the water up 5' so I'm more likely getting about 600 gph flowing out of the tank.
In my opinion, it's about flow in the tank, not flow through the sump.
