return pumps keeping dying

I have had my current tank for roughly 2 years and in that time period I have gone through 4 submersible pumps. 2 rios and 2 quiet one 4000's. My second quiet one just died and i'm starting to get quite angry at pumps in general. Is it possible that there is something specific about my setup or possibly even the wiring in my house causing these pumps to die or am i just freakishly unlucky? I run them as a return on my 75 gallon with flexible tubing.

Sounds like a case of bad luck, but try a more quality pump. Danner Mags are what I use and for me they have always lasted for years. Occasionally you need to replace the impeller but that's about it. If you wanna go a step further than that, get an eheim, they are known for their durability, but they can also be expensive.

I highly doubt you had four bad pumps in 2 yrs. It's got to be something in your set up. Do you clean the pumps? Tell me more about the set up..

I used to think my pumps were going bad and then found out I had calcium buildup that kept the impellor from spinning on the shaft. Took some cleaning and broke a few impellors, but saved several pumps that I thought were dead.

Sounds like you need to clean them more frequently. Quiet ones arent the best pump but they are decent. Do they ever run dry?

Thats what i was thinking. My setup is simple. 75 gallon, hob overflow split drainage into 30 gallon sump, one lines goes to skimmer section on the right, the other goes into the refugium on the left, both overflow into the return section in the middle. Pumps connected to flexible tubing attached to a u-shaped return nozzle. I clean the pumps occasionally, but they're never terribly dirty, they do tend to build up a little bit of precipitation on the impeller due to heat, but i soak the pumps in vinegar and they clean right up.

get a nice pump and clean it every 6 months. Ehiem is a good choice that will last many years. You already paid the same price buying 2 rios and 2 quiet ones.

What size tubing are you using on the pumps? Are you using a smaller size than the outlet? Also, do you have a ball-valve or gate-valve restricting the pump inlet?

Four pumps is a lot, but quietones and rios are not very good to begin with.
