Return section of sump

Might be a dumb question but my return section is just stagnet water above the pump.
Is this a big deal?

The only time the surface tension breaks is when the ATO runs.

I thought about moving the return from the skimmer or the gfo reactor to this section just to keep the water moving.

Any ideas? Or am I thinking too much

It can be a common problem- you might add a small maxijet or other pump to increase circulation. I have a 50g Rubbermaid stock tank as a sump and have a circulation pump going.

How is your sump configured? In mine, for example, water enters the final chamber by flowing over the top of the last baffle. I have about a 1/2" drop after said baffle which keeps the surface clean.

Your water isn't 'stagnant' BTW, its just got a bit of surface crud. Not a biggie really.

The return is in the middle. I have cheato and some rock on one side and the skimmer in the other. Both sides flow back to the middle return but there's no bubble trap. The water enters the return from the bottom below a baffle. I bought this all used and am planning and new sump once I save enough for a better skimmer and return pump.
