Return to the Hobby 34g Solana

Well some good news, extreme didn't make it very hard for me to make use of my credit.

I've picked up a couple aussie pieces that I can't wait to get! One of them is an Acropora spathulata aka "aussie thick millie". The other is a stunning favia.

Here are the pics from the site, I can't wait to see what they look like when I get them in my tank!

quick update, fragged dying pieces, and did a good size water change.

Unfortunately the water change did not yield the results I was looking for. Nitrates are holding steady which is good, considering what is going on with the tank. Phosphates however continue to rise. I decided to test the NSW I am using (from scripps in SD), and it returned .05 phosphates. Which granted won't increase my phosphates as I'm up to .13 now, but I won't be able to lower it with water changes back to below .03 as long as I'm using NSW. I guess a combination of overfeeding lps, and those dying acros have taken there toll on my hard to work get my nitrates and phosphates below the acceptable levels. Hopefully leaving the tank alone for a few days to let the skimmer, ecobak, and gfo do there thing will reduce things again. If not I may start getting a batch of IO ready in the event parameters continue to rise, but as of now feeding the lps is off the table for a little while.

On a side note. I'm starting to research HOB skimmers. I do feel like I'm making progress with the 9002. I've got it to where the foam head is staying consistent but I'm just not getting the skimate I expected from it by this time. I'm not going to go out and buy something tomorrow, but considering how quickly this tank is getting heavily stocked I'd like to have a good idea of what skimmers to look at if I feel it's something I need to do. I also feel I've totally lost my goal of keeping the outside of the tank really clean and having that "rimless japanese feel" so with that all bets are off. I've got enough crap hanging off the tank, how much worse will a hob skimmer make things look?

Either way I'm thinking of the WM H1/H2, or the SWC Hobs. Any thoughts? Will both of these work on a Solana, or is there something that just kicks butt in the hob world I should look at? The last hob I purchased was the first generation bakpak.. ya..it's been that long.

Quick update, got my replacement corals from extreme, great looking pieces! Need to figure out how to mount them.

I also dusted off the macro lens

looking beautiful!

I have a few questions regarding silicone.

1. What did you use to clean the excess silicone off the glass after removing the back?

2. What silicone did you use to reapply the wall? Where did you get it?

3. What did you use to remove the excess silicone after reattaching the wall?

4. Did you have to hold the wall or use something to hold it in place?

5. any other pointers?

I didn't remove the back wall, the rock wall I put it in just masks it. It's held in place by my other rocks, which wedge it back, a footer a well which is buried in sand, and the weight of the piece. there is about a 1/5th of an inch gap though between the rock wall, and the old black wall that I've been trying to think of how to seal up but have gotten used to it. Right now I guess it's just acting as a cryptic zone, I pump the water out of there randomly with a turky bastard. Some people will silicon the backwall in, but since the tank was already going when I added it, I couldn't do that and I wasn't sure I was going to like it so I like having the option of removing it.

What kind of lighting were the corals taken under?

What kind of lighting were the corals taken under?

I'm not sure really, those pictures I took from extremes web site after I bought the pieces. The pics above that I took are under reeflux 20k, ati fiji purple, and a blue++. The big difference though are because of the use of a top down box. I need to get another one. Things look so much more coloufull when shooting top down.

..ya gf out of town, to much free time to take photos ect.. Rearranged the tank, glued some corals down ect. Here are some new photos.

Full Tank shots..

Could you take more pics of ur lighting setup?

I've been trying to find a quality unit and do something similar.

About time for an update. First off Wind the light is just a aquamedic pendant hanging over the tank (attached with a hanging kit) see http://www.aqua-medic.com/Spacelight_EX.shtml but I will post some stuff before.

In general, been fighting algae, even though I'm getting good numbers. Last of the "wild" indo pieces from that shipment have gone, but the aussie SPS, and most others are doing great. I have something going on weird with one frag I need to figure out think it may be to much flow I'm going to pop it off the rock dip, and inspect it tonight.

I picked up some amazing LPS, and a couple frags from DFS. The other week. Not sure what it is, but it's gotta be one of the coolest pieces I've owned/seen.

129633166.jpg

I also got a ORA belnia, a Leprechaun beard frag.

I went out of town for 4 days, and when I came back I tested my water. I finally hit 0/0 on nitrates and phosphates but came back to a poorly operating skimmer and a tank just covered in aglea, both good, and bad. Starting to see wide spread bits of Coraline aglea showing up all over the tank, but also patches of cyano.

I'm really over fighting with my skimmers, I had to set up a QT temp holding tank and I tossed my stock solana skimmer back it.. It was skimmer right from the get go, not great but working. With the tunzee I can't seem to get anything but either overflow into that tunze or at best collection in the neck. With the Solana it skims..but nothing to write home about.

Either way it may be the end of the Solana for me.

During my trip down south (outside of my need to get out of town). I stopped to take a look at a used tank setup. It was to close to what I want, and I couldn't pass it up and the price included all the equipment (which some I will be tossing in the equipment forum shortly as I won't need).

The tank is a 65 gallon low-iron (starphire) internally euro, rimless setup, with a external overflow and a metal stand/facade. It's 36x24x18. Which is pretty much the exact footprint of my all time favorite tank 36x24x24..with a few less gallons and a little more friendly to reach in and use.

I'm currently plumbing it, and mixing up some water. I still had some left over rock curing from back when I first setup this tank. The Tank setup came complete, new light pendant, chiller, heater, powerheads, sump, even a skimmer that I actually saw SKIMMING and pulling out gunk. It's a octo something or other. The downside is I don't like the sump. It's a simple 40 gallon, it's to tall, but it will work for now hopefully i can replace it with something that has a 30x20x12 foot print down the road to make it easier to dig around in.

Now, here comes the problem. I need to decide what to do with the Solana. I've got this love hate relationship with it. When I'm working on it, or need to change things the all in one feature drives me nuts and ****es me off, I also hate the fact that I have a ton of crap hanging off the sides and back really killing that "rimless" look. When I'm not messing with the tank. I love it. I'm really happy with the rock wall ect ect.

For now I'm going to keep both running until I'm ready to move all the SPS over to the 65, but after that I need to decide what to do. My GF likes puffer fish, softies, anenomes, and I want to try to keep my tank pretty much dedicated to Mussidae, and Acroporidae.

I however don't like the idea of keeping 2 separate systems (again), without a common sump to much work, to much money ect ect. I hate to toss out all the hard work we put in the rock wall, but I don't feel like making a new one either for this new tank...decisions.

Anyways the trip down south was great, there was some other coral/reef related things that happened but I'm not going to go into to much detail on RC until I figure out where I'm going in terms of the long term possibility of making reefing more then a hobby again for me. I visited some old friends/contacts and checked out the "status" of things first hand. I have to say I'm pretty impressed with the quality that is coming in at this time...of course I couldn't leave empty handed. ^_^ I just need to take some serious time to think about where things are headed and the long term viability of going down that route again.

With that said here are some updated photos.

Here is the new tank getting setup (facade is out of the picture). You can also see the current hanging system (wind). I used a 1.5 piece of foam between the stand and tank to raise it up, as well as help smooth things out.

130015982.jpg

Here is the new for me, but dirty as all heck tank.
130015990.jpg

This is my plumbing system, I'm setting up manifolds for the reactor, and I put in 2 extra ports if I ever need to run the chiller, or any other additional things

130015991.jpg

Here is the external durso around the back. I need to build some sort of overflow box inside just small enough to skim the surface. I don't really like how far the pipe sticks out from the back, but I only had one bulk head and didn't want to risk shaving it, or the pipe to save maybe 1-2". In the end I always find when I put the tank to close to the wall for some reason there is something I need to do in the back and I end up ****ed that I can't reach behind. At least this removes that potential for frustration even if it's a little less sightly when looking from the side.

130015992.jpg

I also got my hands on my second Melv photobox. Unfortunetly it didn't last to long as I was cutting a piece of pvc for the new tank, and knocked it off the counter across the room....I needless to say I need some Weldon to put it back together.

Anyways here are a couple photos I took before I broke it

130015983.jpg

130015985.jpg

a new acan I got..not all the way open it has polyps that are almost 2" across..very cool imop

and of course a few of my favorite fish barnacle blennies everything is in a 20 long QT atm.. this one decided to hide in a filter sock of carbon.

EDIT: Oh ya on the ecobak. Numbers are down, but clumping is back even w/plastic discs replacing the foam..not sure what to do at this point.

NO... don't get rid of your SOLANA! It looks sooooo good right now. Why not have 2 tanks? lol. I have to say, I really like the 60 Solana. No sump in tank taking up extra room. All equipment is hidden in the stand. The biggest thing is I love the clean, cube look. Your tank would totally be TOTM material down the road. Don't get rid of it!

I agree with Med...your Solana is beautiful.

Thanks for the kind words guys. I guess for now I'm just going to move my LPS over to the 65, and keep the SPS in the Solana until the 65 has matured (or I get fed up with running 2 tanks ha)

Well, the deed is done. The tank params on the new setup were keeping stable. I decided to make the switch after running into some issues maintaining to tanks. My pos refracatometer wasn't holding it's calibration and I was running my tanks @ 1.029 instead of 1.026.

Although with all said and done it was a really good idea that I made the switch. The rock wall was a TICKING time bomb. When I pulled it out the entire area between the rock wall, and the intank sump was just packed with a few months of detritus. Had it some how gotten disturbed further down the road it could have cause some serious issues.

Either way. Here are the "final" pics. I'm still debating my new scape. So here are some pics!

Final Pics before tearing down the 34g
