Returning To The Hobby

If you haven't read this it's a good read about skimmers

Should i be worried about micro bubbles in my tank if i don't put in a bubble trap? How can i keep the water in my sump consistent for my skimmer if i don't have a baffle? Another design im considering is a 1 baffle and 1 bubble trap design. 1 Baffle that closes in the overflow drain and skimmer. And then a bubble trap after the refugium so that the return pump dosent get micro bubbles

The skimmer is going to take up most of your tank. If your worried about bubbles then I would make a bubble trap your chateo will help to get rid of bubbles though. With the amount of space you have I would only make a bubble trap at most. Your ATO keeps your water level constant in your sump. You can put 4 baffles in if you want to your just going to end up with a small fuge then is all. This is about sumps with no baffles

I think im just going to put in one baffle for the skimmer because I dont want to spend extra on a ATO.

As far as WP power heads they are very cheap. People consider them disposable because of the cost. They won't last as long as some of the more pricey power heads but you can afford to replace them and still spend less money.

You can run a fish only system with just live rock and power heads. You could also use HOB equipment but it looks ugly. A HOB filter will make the sound of running water all the time. There are a lot of different ways to set a system up. No matter what you do you will have to top the tank off with RO/DI water so your SG doesn't go up rather you do it or an ATO does. Water changes can take the place of a skimmer. A skimmer will keep your water cleaner though. You can get away with a bit more in a fish only system.

The reef 110 should be fine, I have that one on my 40G reef tank and it does an awesome job. I have a larger bio load in that tank, 6 fish, tons of inverts, tons of corals, and 4 nems, I also over feed. The skimmer handles it like a champ but I do skim kinda wet so I have to clean it out every 3-4 days, but it keeps my water pristine. I also do a water change of 15% every two weeks.

The sump I estimate will be like $400.. Which is a bit too much for me to swallow. I do not want to buy a ATO and I do not mind filling up the tank with a bit of water everyday when I go to feed the fish. I guess I will put in a few baffles so my skimmer will get a constant water level and work well. Also Are pre-made sumps made by RMS stores worth it? We live in the country so the nearest RMS stores are 40-50 miles away.

Premade sumps are a rip off. My sump cost me $55 to make and it's a 20gal with 4 glass baffles. Not sure what your talking about that cost $400. You only top your tank off when the level lowers if you do it to much you SG will lower.

Thats excluding equipment right? :hmm2: I still have to buy all of my equipment

If you haven't bought the tank yet, consider a 40 Breeder. Generally considered a well-proportioned tank and available in Petcos $1 per gallon sale. Or check Craig's list or your local reef club board to find one already drilled.

If you want a cheap set up fish only just run power heads and live rock
We will see soon If I can afford a sump. If not, I guess A HOB skimmer and powerheads and live rock and sand will do the job. Another question, If I have a HOB skimmer or In-sump skimmer, Do I have to keep it running 24/7?

Is there $1 sale still going on?

Visited a few LFS stores in my area today.. One of them I went to was pretty amazing and the other was OK. We are going to check out a few more LFS stores next week. Some of the fish I was considering where a few peppermint shrimp (I wanted Skunk Scarlet cleaner shrimp but dident see any), Maybe about 3 Ocellaris clownfish, I kinda want 1 yellow tang or some kind of tang (It might be to big though) and so far I dont know what else to get yet. Still have to do some more research on the fish I saw there. As for equipment I think im going to order it all online, the stuff at LFS stores are really marked up and generic. Also How many GPH do you recommend for my return pump and overflow box? Its a 30 gallon+10 gallon sump.
