Returning to what I love - My new 180 Rimless

Hey Snaza!

Hope all is well down under. I'll take some update shots today and get them up.. I have my doser and Apex controller up and running now.. Still learning how to fine tune the controller. The web server on the Apex is awesome!!! Pics to follow.

BTW.. How are things coming with your new setup?

Here's the tank at 3 months old...

Hi mate,

Things are good here. Finally bought and moved into my new (1940's) house:D

Got my lights and skimmer just need to get the house strengthened to support the new tank. Still haven't ordered that yet

Snaza,

Thanks man. That's great news with the house. I'm sure your tank project will be awesome. Are you running your new ATI PM on your current system? If so, please post some pictures here... You know I'm a big fan of your tank!

R.yumaDaddy? (luv that name. LOl),

Thank you. I'm not sure what the I'd is on the coral you're referring to. It was given to me by a friend who is in the process of breaking down his tank. Looking at it closely, it has the coralite structure of a purple millepora just with thinner branches.. When and if I can ever get a positive I'd,I will post it... Better yet, if ur ever in queens on a visit to NYC, stop by and I will frag u a piece.

Sorry, haven't setup the new ATI yet. I moved house about 3 weeks ago and my tank suffered. Lost many SPS. Got lots of frags now. Still planning new tank but should be up and running next month.

I'm sorry to hear about what happened with the move, but I'm definitely happy to see you with the house that you want... I'm sure the new tank will more beautiful than your last, which is a pretty tall order. LOL..

Here are some more shots :

Not sure how I missed this thread :) Welcome back Jonathan! Great to see you in a nice new tank. Looking forward to seeing your progress.

Hey Rich!,

It's been a long time man.. I hope all is well with you.. I'm surprised that Mike didn't let you know that I started a build thread a few months back.. The last time I spoke with him, he was dealing with some CR issues... Do you still have your tank up and running?

Looks good my friend:)
Frank

Hey Frank,

Thanks to you Bro... Would you believe that the birdsnest 4 pics up is the Steve Tyree that I got from you. I think it was the Fiji Purple that did the trick! It's directly over this coral.

I'm thinking about changing my bulb configuration just a bit. Right now my dusk and dawn bulbs are a KZ Fiji purple and a true antinic. I like the results of the Fiji Purple, but the Antinic is a waste of a bulb slot IMO. I will either replace the antinic with another Fiji purple or maybe a procolor... Not sure yet. Suggestions are welcome because I'm really not happy with the coral color directly under the antinic.

Great build! I'm impressed with the colors of your SPS. I've been battling brown corals since I started with SPS a couple months ago. I think I'm going to go the Neozeo route after a little research. Ever heard of this approach to achieving a UNLS system?

Thanks Sedor.. I am unfamiliar with the details of Neozeo.. before you head off in any one direction to achieve and ULNS, I would consider the cheaper method and use Vodka like myself and so many others.. There is a great thread started by "SunnyX" that talks about his system, which uses the Vodka method.. He also has links to some Aquarist articles that thoroughly cover the procedure.. I have been following his method of Vodka and bacteria dosing with very good results and have achieved undetectable nitrates and phosphates. Did I mention it was cheap?

You can find Sunnyx's thread here:

Good luck!

Thanks Snaza,
I'm using 4 ATI Blue Plus, 4 ATI Aqua Blue Secials, 1 Korallin Fiji Purple and one True Antinic. I'm about to deep 6 the Antinic because of the low par and the fading of the coral colors directly under that light.

Thanks for the link...now my eyes hurt from reading all night :D I guess the perfectionist in me is to blame. I can't help but start from the very first page on a build and I think Sunny's has split twice now

Would you be so kind as to provide a set of dosing instructions that you followed for someone interested in following the same approach? Did you start with the bacteria dosing and then move onto vodka? Do you use some of the other products Sunny mentions such as Reef Boosters?

Hey Sedor,

You're welcome. A detailed set of instructions can be found here.

http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2008-08/nftt/index.php

Dosing will vary based off the size of your tank.. I started bacterial seeding wiwith Microbe Lift first, then I began using MB7. I'm sure that using both were unnecessary, but I started with Dead rock (all of it). It had been sitting in my Buddy's garage in saltwater with no heater or circulation pump for months.. I needed as much Biodiversity as I could get, so between seeding the tank with Microbe Lift and MB7, I also used two very small pieces of porous live rock and a cup of sand from a very established tank... When I started the MB7, I began by following the new tank directions. After about a month is when I began dosing the Vodka..

Currently, I am dosing 4ML of vodka a day and 4 drops of MB7 a day.. These amounts are the maintenance amounts for my system and I have no detectable NO3 or PO4.

If you take your time and follow the instructions in the link I provided carefully, it will Zero out your Nitrates and Phosphates in about month's time.. There is no need to use a Phosphate remover once you start because you will run the risk of starving your corals.

Depending on what your current parameters are, just follow the directions on the MB7. The whole idea is Bio-diversity.. You want to build it up before you start the vodka dosing so that the good bacteria always out number the bad before you start feeding it that powerful clear stuff (Similar to the way it works with our bodies).

Good luck and let us know how it works for you should you decide to take this route.
