Returning to what I love - My new 180 Rimless

Thanks Bro. I'm going to lay low on fish right now... At least until I get back.. I want to make sure the tank is clean before I start adding anything again..

Well, I'm back from vacation.. St. Lucia is a beautiful island by the way if anyone is considering a visit.. I did some thinking about the tank while I was gone in terms of ways that I can modify a few things.. Primarily, I've never felt comfortable with the turnover rate of my tank.. I have 1 1.5 in drain and 1 1.5 inch return.. With my Dart return pump, I have to dial it down very low so that the water level does not rise too high.. Although the vortechs and tunze 6100 are creating awesome flow, I really wanted to up the turn-over between the tank and the sump.. Here's the plan... I'm converting the return hole in my overflow to another drain fitted with a second GEO Aqua-silencer. For my return, I am going to plump off my manifold to a Tee and feed two 1" Sea Swirls capable of handling 1150 Gal/hr each. With a combined total of a 3 inch drain, I should be able to move some serious water. Over the years, higher turnover always worked out better for me. I will post pics once I have everything set up this weekend..

I was really bummed about the loss of my achilles. I lost a few fish as a result of th ich outbreak.. Fortunately, a buddy of mine has a 90 gallon that I can use as a QT. I will be picking that up this weekend as well and getting it started.. I have a busy hobby weekend ahead...

The same exact thing happened to me with my PB. Im happy to say that all fish with exception of the PB and a cleaner wrasse that carpet surfed from the QT made it through the treatment. Im sure you know but make sure your DT is fishless for 8 weeks, 10 is better and you will be good to go again. Good luck with your treatment and have fun catching all those fish.

Awesome tank, just read the whole thread. Glad to see another NY'er on here. I noticed you mentioned you picked up some fish at country critters, how is their fish/coral selection. I have been going to a few pet shops here for corals and have been pretty dissapointed with their SPS. Most of the time all the stuff I see is all browned out although I been meaning to check out Country Critters to see what they have.

Bro, it's the worst. My biggest fear is taking a perfectly healthy fish out of my DT just for him to die in the QT.. Thanks for the advice and well wishes!

Hey NY! Thanks Bro! There's quite a few of us around.. I've met a lot of great people through the Long Island Reef Association (LIRA). They're a great bunch of folks and very supportive. Country Critters is a great store with really healthy specimens. You can also find some decent coral as well sometime. If you want a really good store for coral, look no further than Manhattan Aquariums or on line @ (Uniquecoral.com). You can always purchase on-line and have them hold it for pick-up. It is definately worth the drive. it's right up the street from the Jacob Javits center on 37th St and has parking.. If you get a chance to go, let me know what you think. Another great option is to contact RC member MGNY on RC. He has a tank lit with all VHOs that you would not believe. He always has a great pieces to sell at great prices. I believe he's right beyond Oceanside.

Jon,
Your tank already talked me into it. My problem is that I still have the price on the bag problem unless it always says $20. A new tank would be a whole different issue. Gotta wait for the right time to compromise.:lmao:

:LMAO: So, you got my signature huh? I hear ya' Brett. Just tell her that you were driving home one day and you saw someone placing a beautiful new rimless out at a local garage sale. Make sure you get a fathead black marker and put 25$ on it. That should do it! If that goes horribly wrong (and it probably will), you always have a place with me on the east coast.

That's fantastic Andrew! I contacted RC member "kev apsley" who works at Manhattan Aquariums and he confirmed that they do have Sunday hours.. I also asked him to give you a tour of their prop system, which is very cool.. He's very familiar with your build thread.. Send him a PM and let him know the exact day you'll be here. This way he can make sure that he is there when you arrive. Great guy!

Pictures coming soon.. As for videos... you've put me into an early retirement

Sweet, thank you very much. I will certainly contact him as the date approaches.

Standing by for the pictures. I might just take some today too :D

So the conversion is complete.. my return hole is now a second 1.5" drain and 2 1" Seaswirls have been installed.. I'd like to thank RC member and my friend "JZDAD" for spending the day with me on saturday and helping me to get everything installed. This conversion makes a huge difference in terms of turn-over and random flow in the tank... You will notice a lot of micro bubbles in these shots. I will take more pics tomorrow when the tank is nice and clear..

This shot was taken with my vortechs and Tunze off.. These Sea Swirls can really move some water.. Notice the spread of the micro bubbles and the ripple at the water line

Thanks Will.. I'm learning from you just the same.. You tank is on its way! just keep doing what your doing.. You're experiencing some crazy growth and color changes. Thanks again for all the help.

OK I promised some pictures once the micro-bubbles cleared. So here they are.. My colors have faded a tad due to my hand being in the tank so much over the last week.. Now it's time to sit back and let them recover.. I hope you guys enjoy the pics!

Clearer pic of new acan lord colony.. I don't know if you all have seen some of the medical reports over the last few days, but they are looking into Aussie LPS, particularly acan lords and scolys as containing a possible cure for cancer. Wouldn't that be something??? It has something to do with their florescence.

If anyone has been affected in some way by cancer and I'm sure there are many like myself, you may find this article interesting as it relates to our wonderful hobby. I'd like to correct myself in that the Aussie LPS that they are referring to do not contain a possible cure, but that the florescence of the corals may help in illuminating cancer cells so that subtle changes can be witnessed. Never the less, after watching cancer destroy my Dad in 3 months time, I thought there are many that would find this interesting as it relates to further advancement in cancer research...
