Returning to what I love - My new 180 Rimless

I got him from Country Critters on Rt. 112 in Patchougue, Long Island..... You can take the Southern State or the LIE straight out to 112. You can find much btter prices elsewhere, but I have always gotten really healthy fish from them.. That's worth the drive and the price to me.

I have been buying from them for years. Have never lost a fish I bought from there. And Johnathan is a pleasure to deal with as well.

just to have something to compare to what do u keep ur alk, calcium, mag at? my alk is 8.4, calcium is 560 and mag is at 1200. i am trying to bring the alk up to 9, calcium down and mag up to 1300 does this sound good?

I gotta say, I usually look at the corals in pics. In your tank your fish list is so awesome I cant stop looking at the fish. The corals look great too. Do you get alot of aggresion from that pack of fish? Truely inspiring, you make me want to tear my tank down and start over. Nice job, cant wait for more.

Yes, he is.. It's nice to have a name sake that's a cool person to deal with :)

WOW the tank is really looking awesome Jon. Very nice!

Thanks Rich! Trying to achieve your greatness Sir!

My alk stays between 7&8. I have to keep it low because I Carbon dose with vinegar and vodka.. High alk when carbon dosing will give your SPS rounded tips that will stunt growth as well as cause burnt tips.. My calcium the last time I checked was at 540, which to me is higher than necessary, but my orginal salt (Reef Crystals) mixed high and even since switching to TM Pro reef, my calcium has dropped only slightly.. No negative effects though.. just a reason to buy more coral to suck up the extra calcium ;) My Mag is in the 1300 range... I auto dose 110ml of ESV Mag weekly to ensure it stays in that range. Overall, I think your Params are fine.. if your tank is new.. I would just let it settle in there and allow it to take off.. Just try your best to keep your NO3 and P04 down to a minimum and you should be fine.

LOL  I knew someone would get me about the fish pictures in the SPS forum :) In my last tank, I was always made afraid by folks in the hobby about having too many fish.. Personally, I think that fish are the best food producers of coral food.. However, you have to build your system and adjust your husbandry to deal with the bio-load effectively (My method is..Carbon dosing , regular water changes, great skimmer that can find the missing dead :) . For me , nothing brings a tank alive like a nice selection of fish to compliment beautiful corals.. After seeing David Saxby of Deltec's tank video on Youtube, I was hooked! Agression is mainly from the tangs, but they are all settling down nicely and the pecking order is now established.. Eventually the Achilles will take over as the head honcho. The YT won't like it, but he will have no choice.. The swimming abilitiy of ATs is absolutely sick! Once he gets larger the YT will have to step down as the King. Thank you so much for your kind comments! Adjust your Nutrient export and gor it. I totally enjoy my tank more because of the fish this time around.. Stay tuned for new pics in the upcoming weeks :)

thats great camera bro.. i have canon EOS buti cant get such a great pics. maybe i need more practice:)

Dude, I tried my best to find the new EOS T2I that has most o yh same features in a consumer body, but I could not find it anywhere. I end up paying more than I wanted, but I know I will have this camera for a long time. I am still learning about the different iso, aperature and shutter speeds. Thankfully, I have some phrography folks around me to help mr along the way. There is a lot to learn.. Keep at it.

As for the dosing, right now I'm I'm dosing 48ml of vinegar/vodka mix.. I'm also running GFO. I'm dosing 110ml of esv magnesium per week. So far, so good. I'm interested in hearing how things go if you decide to switch over to two part dosing and scrap the CRX.

Your tank is looking great. You get such nice color tones from that ATI, or I should say your bulb combo. Your tank looks very relaxing.

Thank you so much! It is the last thing that I look at before going to bed. Many nights I end up passing out while gazing at it... Very relaxing. I will be switching the uvl antinic white back to a KZ Fiji purple. It's a superior bulb with a nicer color IMHO.

I am waiting on my 5l conteiners from FM and salts to start balling method:). I berly can keep up with alk these days.:))
regarding GFO...man, i hate this thing couple of years ago i had problems and now the same thing.. besal TN on some corals..
maybe bacause i am using in combination with prodibio:(
anyway, last nite i start bio-pellets.. will see:)

Cool to hear that you're moving forward with it! I really wonder why your CR is having a hard time keeping up with your Alk.. Can't you just crank up the CO2 a bit to help keep your alk more stable? I had to reduce my CO2 to get it locked in because my alk was way to high for carbon dosing. With GFO, I experienced the same as you in my old tank. I learned then that I was using too much.. once I got the amount needed down, The STN from the base of certain corals stopped and all affected corals recovered.. I would think the affect of using GFO along with the carbon source from prodibio or any carbon source would manifest in your corals getting lighter because too much phosphate is being removed, but not TN... unless they were completely starved.. Hmmm. I'm intrigued by the bio pellets.. Ideally, that is the way to go for carbon dosing... I guess I waiting to hear more feedback so, I be checking in with you to see how its going.. You're the first local guy I know to try.. Good luck!

Jon,
I think i have been on the bio pellets for 3 months now. Personally i don't think its quite as good as dosing vodka or VSV. I only switched to bio pellets cause im moving on friday and wanted to make sure that there wasn't going to be a shock.

How are you liking the pellets?
Rob

Interesting Rob. I'm actually still using vinegar/vodka. Good luck with your move Bro!

Jon, sorry to be impatient but I need more pics. Your tank is one of my favorites and I cant wait any longer. I have to ask, was it hard to switch to a four foot tank after having a wider tank? Im thinking of a change in the near future and I love the depth of yours but having issues with a four foot width having not seen a 4 by 3 in person. Amazing tank.
