Returning to what I love - My new 180 Rimless

Hey Brett,

Vodka is 8 times as strong as vinegar as a carbon source. Use that to calculate how much you need based on your tank volume. Just times your initial vodka dosage by eight and that should do it.

hi, just want to know if you can mix the vodka & vinegar or do you dose seperately? by the way, awesome tank!

Sounds like a win win to me as far as positive reasons to go for it. Really would solve most of my problems. How large of a top off container do you use? I go through like 3-4 gallons a day on average. One more? OT. Did you ever have any issues with diatoms with MB7 or Vodka. I dont know what is causing this stuff but I cant beat it. In most cases, silicates would be to blame but I have no idea where they would be coming from. As always thanks for all the help, it is really appreciated. Glad to hear the kalk is working for you.

You're welcome Bro! I use a 32 Gallon Brute Container, but I'm thinking about switching to a 44 gallon.. I had issues with Diatoms initially with MB 7. However, I can't blame it on that. It may have just been my new tank cycling.. When I use MB7 along with Special Blend now, I don't have that issue.

Thank you so much :) Yes, I mix it in the same container..

Thanks grabthereef! I enjoy sharing it with everyone :) The good and the bad

Hey Padrino! Things are growing really well now. I have seen a spurt since getting my ph up.. So, I'm a believer now in higher ph. How is your tank doing? Any pictures to share?

Looking great Jonathan... super colours! I'd love to have some of those corals.

Btw, I went to Manhattan Aquariums the other week in NY. Sent a PM to your buddy there but no reply. Anyhow, I had a look at their setup and saw those many corals upstairs and downstairs. Is that one of the best aquarium shops in NY?

Nice updated pics Jon. Mind sharing with us again you reefing philosophy?

Its looking amazing.....

Thanks D! I feel honored Bro.. That's the first time anyone asked me about my philosophy . For me, I guess it's no different from what we learn most here on RC... Stability via good husbandry including regularly scheduled water changes, awesome flow and keeping our hands out of the water as much as possible.. It's amazing what we can learn about our system by just watching them closely. Dipping corals and quarantining fish have also been great lessons along the way although I don't quarantine fish like I should.

As for nutrient export... The guys in europe really found something with carbon dosing.. It really helped change the game in reefing and to simplify our lives. With everything I did in my first tank between a DSB, refugium, etc.. achieving and maintaining colors was always an arduous task.. With this tank I started carbon dosing at startup and colors have been fairly consistent from the beginning.. Anything that can help do that is worth a try in my book. Automation via dosing pumps has helped a great deal and definitely something that i recommend to folks. I for one, love set it and forget it solutions.. I spent so much money on crap getting into this hobby, just to either sell it or throw it away, which is why it is great o have a mentor or two to help you through the initial phases. You may spend more up front, but you won't waste money that you can use for those really nice colored sticks :)

Thanks Andrew! I would love to trade with you if it was permitted.. You have put together quite a collection yourself.

I'm glad you made it by Manhattan Aquariums.. I'm sorry Kev never responded to you... He must have been tied up because he's a great guy.. That is definitely on of the best in New York.. I understand there is one that's fairly new in Brooklyn that I have yet to go to, but I hear it is nice as well. They are very scattered here. I will check out the one in brooklyn and let you know what I think if you're looking to visit another store on your next visit... I'm sure that whatever you find here will pale in comparison to the "fish street" that you havein Hong Kong :bounce1: Many of my corals came from other hobbyist who have some great tanks.

Jonathon,
Sorry i have been really busy. I bought my first house 3 months ago with my wife and now ive been doing crazy renos. Got the house on June 25 and still have not moved in yet. Just finished the marble floors after i ripped out a wall for the new 220 that i will be building. More on that later.

As for my 90 the SPS is growing like crazy. I have not done a water change in easily 5 months. been runing the biopellets for pretty close to a year now and its been pretty decent. I bascally have time to feed my fish thats about it. Ill try and get a picture for you in the next couple days..

We have to arrange a meeting one day if you ever come north let me know.

Congrats on the new house.. I know how much work that can be first hand. Take your time with the pics and good luck with getting everything ready for the move-in! :)

How you liking that compared to the prior bulb combo?

Getting me 8 bulb PM today...have 6 blue+, 3 AB special, 1 FP, 2 UVL actinics coming. Bought 12 bulbs to play around although I have no idea what combo I'm using...I do like more of the bluer 20k look. Won't have my tank for 3 more weeks though.

was thinking trying a few dii combo's

I dunno, I'm so confused...lol

I recently had the same conversation with Sonny (sunnyx). I really like the par value of the Blue + tubes. So far, I'm really happy with my current combo. I grew to not like the UVL antinic white bulb. I only used the antinic white because there were folks who stated that it was similar in appearance to the Fiji Purple (WRONG- not even close). The KZ Fiji Purple is such an awesome bulb and when mixed with a blue+ for Dusk/dawn, the color mix is outstanding. I like your first combo.. I'm not a fan of antinic bulbs because of their lack of par..

I think you will be really happy with that. Best of luck to you & let me know how it works out :)

Thanks!

Your tank is from Miracles right? Is the bottom free floating(sitting on the trim) or does it touch the stand?

You welcome! My tank was actually built by a local shop in Brooklyn (1000 Island Aquarium). They sell on-line under cadlights.com. The bottom of my tank sits directly on the stand..
