Rhomboid Wrasse

Thinking of purchasing a pair of rhomboid wrasses.
They have become available in our area.
Quarantine or not to?
Are these fish suceptable to disease like other fish?
What would be ideal quarantine procedures in your opinion?

i would qt them for sure. i believe zemuron can chime in here. i think he recommended a 1/2 dose of copper then a full dose again if necessary. also, if there's a lot of external wounds, he recommends nitrofurazone. then deworm with prazipro.

i have NO idea where to obtain nitrofurazone. maybe someone else can help.

deworm with prazipro twice. I have lost a couple of fairies to what appears to be internal parasites when I did the recommended dosage with prazipro. I have since been recommended to do it twice.

most fairy wrasses need to be dewormed. Prazi pro works well (you can get it on ebay or google it) Do not use copper or other meds unless you need to. You will see any signs of disease within the first 3-5 days. Nitrofurazone is hard to find, i actually get mine from a wholesaler out of LA.

furazone green works as well, but i find it to be not as effective.

The LFS has had them for three days now. I was going to wait a week before getting them. Good idea?

if you don't want the fish it is a good idea. Fairy wrasses go quick. They are very popular.

I've gotten quite a few fairies from my lfs that buys from you.
(You know who I'm talking about) And I haven't had any issues with the fish that he has gotten from you. Scotts, Flames and Rhomboids.

I use to use prazi pro on all my fish but ran out recently (its pricey and shipping to HI is a pain) but i use nitrofurazone often. Nitro is used for external wounds such as sores, fin rot, nipped fins, and can be used to internal infections as well with a higher dose. Works very very well so far

What is the trick to getting a flame wrasse that will thrive?

I had one but right before I was going to move him to the display tank (qt for six weeks) he bit the dust. I had ordered one before him and it arrived doa.

They are one of my faves but I am skeptical about ever trying another as they seem so delicate and they are pricey to boot.

BTW yours is awesome.

I've had no luck with flames. Got one from LA that was supposed to be de-wormed and died in 2 months. Just overnight. Got another straight from Hawaii but he died during de-worming. Poor fish seemed to be just infested.

My Flame and many others have come from my LFS that orders from DJ. Have your LFS get them from him. I have real good luck with all of my wrasses just keeping them fed well and good water perameters. Keeping them in the tank is the trick, you have to have a good top like Snorvich says.

who is DJ?

bradleyj: What's your temp? I've had much better luck with wrasses keeping the temp down to mid 70's.

I agree DJ's are top notch. My lineatus and laboutei females and rhomboid male are from him. I try and keep mine below 79.
