In your experience how long does it take to change from female/juv to male as the only fish of the species in this tank

Depends. A few days to a few months to never.

Depends on tankmates. Depends on hierarchy. Depends on the individual fish.

Thanks, I thought that an individual as the only species among other fish in an aquarium will always become males. I thought this was a characteristic of fish in this genus.

Always is a strong word. :)

As a general rule, yes; that's true. However, other factors do come into play.

My real point was needing to know more about the other tankmates. If kept in the presence of other fairy wrasses, a transition is almost guaranteed. However, if a dominant male of another species accepted a female rhomboid as it's own species, a transition might be prevented. If kept without any other wrasses at all, a transition might be prevented by a lack of biological trigger to compete with other species. Ultimately, it's the interaction with other fish and a fish's demeanor which will determine if a transition happens or not.

I understand and learned something...so with a 2.5 inch juvenile labout's and a 3 inch juvenile rhomboidalis in a large tank with pair of snowfakes, pair of helfichi fire fish a diamond goby and a blue spot jawfish they will in all probability change to male but the timing of the change can not be determined...correct?

It could take awhile for the full change...

I purchased two female pylei fairy wrasses. One started changing then went back to completely female after getting internal parasites. This made it weak to the point the other nipped some good chunks of fin off. The other female started to become alpha. This happened back in March-April, and she still is only showing some signs of going male. These signs include slowly growing pelvic fins, blue color coming in, and overall growth in all fins. Nothing too major yet. I may very well have a male already had the one female not gotten internal parasites (after two weeks of Prazi too).

Good luck, and enjoy the transformation!
