Richardson's Moray Eel ( G. richardsonii )

Does anyone have any experiance with these eels? I just ordered a pair, at least hoping that they really are, and wanted to see if anyone has one. They'll go into a 20 gallon qt for the time being, and then will either go into my 75 with a pair of OSFF, pair of PJ cardinals, and a damsel or I'll set up a 40 gallon for them. Will have pictures when they arrive on tuesday!

I've had a couple that I've bought as "assorted morays." They've been model citizens and I had no problem keeping them with other fish. I lost both due to escapement (still not sure how that happened) so make sure you've got everything covered so there's no way out!

What fish did you keep yours with? I'd really like to keep them in the 75 but dont want to lose any of my other guys. Did you put any pvc in for them to make homes?
So far I've got window screen over both tanks, but need to do something about the overflows, since I woke up to find my male OSFF in the corner overflow this morning. I also have the plastic hood that came with the 20 gallon on it holding down the mesh, the 75 has the mesh velcroed down and a canopy in the making. I've lost 2 fish to jumping and dont want any eel jerky, so want to make sure its completly escape proof.

They are fairly aggressive for their size and will probably pose a threat, especially to the damsel.

Thanks, I was thinking that would be the case from the little I'd found. Do you think a 40 gallon would be good enough for a pair, and maybe a fuzzy dwarf lion or should I go bigger? It would probably be hooked up to my 75.

As long as the lion has a little size to it already you should be fine. I have one now that I bought about a month or so ago and also had one quite a few years ago, both had a Napolean complex, lol.

Eels arrived today! They held them an extra week because I was going out of town and didnt want to worry the sitter with new arrivals. I was a bit worried when I saw the fedex tracking that said my package was only 4 lbs, then when the box got here I was sure that they sent me the wrong thing. But they were beautifully packaged, bagged 5x and acclimated like champs. One's about 12" and more golden, the other about 10" and more brown. I'll have pics up once I find my cord.

The smaller, darker one has picked a spot in the front of the tank

A bad picture of the larger, lighter one who picked a spot at the back of the tank

So these two may have to be seperated, while feeding today the smaller (LB) eel attacked the larger (BG) over a peice of shrimp. I've been feeding BG first, as it has been the more aggressive feeder of the two, but after the first peice today LB came up out of its feeding spot and tried to steal the shrimp from him which ended with BG's head in LB's mouth. I seperated them with my feeding stick and both went back to their own feeding spots. I continued to feed with no more incidents, but I did finish feeding LB first.
Other than this, they get along well and share a hole, heads usually sticking out together. I may give it another try, feeding LB first.

Feeding time is usually when the majority of problems arise with morays. Whats the size differece?
BG is about 2 inches bigger than LB and maybe 50% thicker. I havent yet gotten to determine the sex of either, I cant see the teeth well enough. But I was suprised that LB went after BG. Thankfully no damage was done to either eel, and they went right back to sharing a hole after feeding.

I'm guessing that any shrimp I put in there would be pretty quickly eaten, or has anyone managed to keep them together? Theres some apastia popping up, and I'd like to throw a few peppermint shrimp in for control but not if they'll just be a snack.

Try dual feeding sticks, that might help with their aggression if they can both eat at the same time.

I wish I could, but the spot that the tank is set up makes it very difficult to do, and it would be impossible to keep an eye on them at the same time.

Tried feeding again today and had no problems what so ever. LB was fed first until full, GB waited impatiently but stayed out of the way. So hopefully feeding LB first will solve the issue, otherwise they'll be seperated.
