Ridiculously Loud overflow.

Sorry if there is already info on this subject as the search function never seems to work for me. I just got a 75 perfecto and I am new to this overflow style filter. The down flow tube to my sump is TERRIBLY loud. It sounds like I have a waterfall in my house. I can actually hear it in the garage with the door closed. I am 99% sure that the sound is from A.) the water actually hitting the water level in my sump B.( Internal water flow into the Overflow tube in the corner of the tank.

I dont have a sock on the down tube right now as it is ordered and just havent arrived yet so I assume some of the noise will be reduced there however the over all noise can only be described as deafening. All equipment except the skimmer is new. I have a Quit one 3000 return pump. Any suggestions on how to quiet it down. I have seen other similar systems and they are nearly silent.

They tend to: however, if the waterfall distance is very large, you can moderate the noise by installing a valve on your downflow line where it goes into the sump and just slowing down the downflow a little: have a friend monitor how high the water in the downflow box is rising, lest you have a flood!

One thing you can try is to put basically a large S bend in the pipe, so that it is not a straight run downhill, (similar to the under sink "P" traps)

I added a couple 45 degree turns along the way to slow down and quiete down the overflow plumbing on my tank. If you can control your return ammount then there is no need to worry about flooding your tank.

Restrict slightly, maybe, but the thing with a valve is that it makes the openning smaller, so things can get stuck in the pipe, the bends don't, all they do is slow the water down.

my overflow was so lould I was ready to trash my tank till I drilled some 1/4 inch holes in the bottom of the overflow pipe near the bottom of the tank. Dont put too meany though or your overflow box wont stay full and make sure your box is water proof. You cant hear mine at all now.

Oh man jesse. wouldn't holes down at the bottom of the tube cause you tank to completely empty in a power outage. Any way I did the S thing and it helped some but there is still a good amount of noise coming from the stand pipe. I am told that once a slime coat builds up it should continue to get quieter as time goes on.
