rimless tanks.. "In" now but what's the appeal?

Like I said, my claims are built on the assumption you'd be using a traditional canopy on the rimmed tank. Obviously the position of your lighting would be limited by the physical dimensions of the canopy.
Now if you're using some other incarnations, some (or all) of those statements may not apply.
I went from a braced tank to a rimless and have been enjoying it. It had a big center brace, had to work around that for lighting, maintenance and aquascaping.
From my perspective the rimless is functionally superior. I don't have to take my arm out of the water moving something from one side to the other, I was able to put in large centerpiece rocks that wouldn't fit in the braced tank once they were encrusted with coral, I could put whatever light combo I wanted and not worry about dark spots with the bracing or where bulbs/LED clusters would be, I have total unrestricted access to the aquarium. Pretty big improvements in my book.
I do prefer the aesthetics as well, but my favorite is getting the top down view. I can observe my clams and colonies so much easier top down. I personally have not experienced any of the downsides some have like splashing over the edge or salt creep. Perhaps it's because miracles designs the overflow so you are about 1.5-2" below the top of the rim, that is a lot of splashing to go over.
Of course if we want tough, better go back to the old style with not only top and bottom bracing, but also down the sides too!

Love my rimless tank. I agree with the comments about the minimalist appeal to it.. That's why I like it. Looks very clean and contemporary. All I have is the AI L fixture on the back of the stand and it tanks my Hydra 26 over the center of the tank. Looks awesome.
I have had my rimless tank running for half of a year now, and got a kitten a couple months ago. She hasn't showed interest and I'm wondering if I should take her paw and touch it into the water because she would certainly hate it and not be curious.. Right now it's way too high for her to jump she would be in the record books if she could. It's a 60 cube so 2x2x2, and the stand is 30" off the ground. So she's not jumping 54".

Remember those faux wood panel walls you used to find in people's houses? That's what tanks with rims remind me of. It's just not appealing though some still have them.

More stylish, modern, sleek look. That being said, I don't like them for myself. I happen to like a lot of "suicidal" fish (jawfish, blennies, gobies etc.), and having water get sloshed over the side when I'm doing routine maintenance would get old fast. To each his/her own though :beer:

LOL, that is true. It's a "Trimless" tank, not rimless.
I don't know where the rimless term came from.
Reminds me of when people say they got new rims for their car.
I want to ask them why they didn't get the spokes?
Because every one of them owns a set of one-piece wheels, not two or three piece. :lol:

I love rimless tanks. The splashing and salt creep are no factor, I clean this area on a daily basis regardless. I dislike canopies so I'm left with the trim on the aquarium; I can live with black but would much rather not. Most jumpers are victims of circumstance, that being your water quality or tank mates irritating them.

Whenever I see pictures from people with Oak rims I immediately ignore whats in the tank because I can't get over how cheap/ugly/dated the tank looks.
You know what's funny is that all BMW X class vehicles are made in Spartanburg, SC. A German engineering company relying on US production facilities relying on southern belles and gentlemen to build cars that will be shipped back to Germany (and around the world) and sold as German cars.
Oh, the irony.
