RIP Goldilocks

I introduced a gsmc into my tank about a month ago, and she has been doing fabulous, she immediately was friendly with my other maroon, and hosted all three of my anenomes (Yes she was a horder) I know three anenomes is excessive but the first one I bought (condy) and the second one was attached to a mushroom rock colony (BTA) and the third my husband thought he would suprise me with (pink tip) Sooo anyway she hosted all of them and it was quite comical and sweet to watch her. She has been doing so well that when I saw a 3 in. long perc at the LFS for 14.00 I went ahead and bought him. I dont have many fish, only 3 so, I thought this guy was just a little larger so it would be ok to introduce into the tank (the whole larger fish so they dont get beat up thought process) and I thought all was well. That was about 4 hours ago. I noticed immediate aggression on her part, but I watched them closely, and after about 5 minutes she calmed down when the new guy chased her off. After 30 min, or so I went to start dinner, and when I came back to check on them, she was laying in the middle of the floor dead. She must have jumped, but she had never done that before and none of my other fish have done anything even close to that. Needless to say my heart broke and I felt like I killed her. I wanted to know if anyone has had this happen and what should I do? Could I replace her if I got it while the tank is still new to the perc? Im so sad!! Thanks all!

I had 3 different fish jump from a tank I had set up as a temp home for them, they jumped cause there was no top, I'd sudgest getting a glass top or canopy of some sort. Also, as for re-introducing another clown may not be so bad as the other I don't think would be established yet.

Sorry for your loss.

I am sorry for your loss. Form the little experience that I have for clownfish is that most will not get along with other clownfish species. Especially with gsmc from what I have read. I have one maroon and two false percs in my tank, but they ar divided so they can't get at each other.

This could have been avoided. I am actually VERY surprised. It should have been the new fish on the floor. Notoriously, maroons are MUCH more aggressive than true percs. And for future reference, NEVER introduce a different type of clown fish into a tank less than 125g (6ft version) and each having their own anemone.

The chances of them getting along perfectly in that situation is still not 100% but it is better than putting the two in a 48" 55g...

Yeah, this is pretty much your fault.
Firstly, you shouldn't have put a female maroon in with another maroon that you have been keeping solo for a while.
Then you certainly shouldn't have introduced a third clownfish of a totally different species into such a small tank.

Lesson learned.
You should do research before adding things to your tank.

I KNOW THIS WAS MY FAULT. PLEASE DO NOT POINT OUT THE OBVIOUS. I do not need you holier than thou people acting as if you have never lost a fish because you have ALWAYS researched every single thing you have ever put in your tanks. PLEASE spare me. For One, I did NOT go buy the fish and then just dump it in my tank without knowing anything. I knew there was a potential for aggression, but I was under the impression that it is usually only if they are the same size, and if the newbie is bigger than the current stock. I am not an idiot, and I did not post this message for you all to ridicule me or treat me as if I am such an idiot that I shouldnt even own fish. First of all I have rescued animals all of my life, and never take any of them for granted. I have a list of exotics in my home as we speak, and 2 of whom were rescues. I stood, watching my tank for 30 minutes before walking away from it and only walked away when they seemed to be leaving each other alone. I was not done watching them, and if the aggression continued before I went to bed I was going to quarantine the new guy and return him to the LFS for his own well being. I really get tired of hearing people act and sound like they have never done anything risky when starting out their tank. The LFS also assured me that they would be fine since he is bigger. I can respect the fact that alot of you know more than I do about the hobby, but I spend day after day studying on my PC about marine life, and I KNOW I made a stupid mistake and I have to live with the fact that I killed an innocent creature, the very thing I try and prevent. BUT some of you are not trying to be helpful or supportive or consoling but downright rude and know nothing about me or my life. I am not one to go get an animal and when it dies just say 'oh well' and get another. Each and every one of my animals are special to me and I am their sole caregiver. Please do not lecture me on proper animal care. I have realized that I cannot put 3 clowns in a 55 g , after what happened I would have to be an idiot to try it again. And an idiot I am not. I have: Blue & Gold Macaw (6 years old) A goffin cockatoo (a rescue), A reverse striped king snake (rescue), A desert tortoise ( 20 years old-a rescue), a fw tank, and my reef tank that *GASP* I love. So please have the decency to ask some questions about me before assuming. And PS thank you to those who were supportive and NICE about my loss.. I have kicked myself daily for what I did...
