RIP NASO TANG: Sad Lessons Learned

Well, I learned a couple of hard lessons this week.

1) I'm not going to buy any more fish from Petco

and

2) I'm not going to buy another fish without seeing it eat first.

I picked up a Naso on a whim last month and it turned out to be a big mistake. I could never get it to eat anything (Prime Reef, Caulerpa, Chaeto, Seaweed, Frozen Mysis, Frozen Brine, Pellets, etc).

It finally got so weak that it got stuck against the intake of one of my modded maxijets. When I saw that, I decided that it was time to euthanize it...

I never saw any signs of disease... It just refused to eat.

:(

On a brighter note, the blue tang that I got at the same time from SoM is doing awesome...

What kind of Naso was it?

It was a Naso lituratus (Female).

I'd wish I knew what was wrong (or went wrong) all of the other inhabitants of my tank are doing great and I never saw any of them harassing the naso.

If the naso was collected using cyanide, that too would cause the inability to eat due to extensive damage to the digestive tract.

I've never heard of Naso literatus being cyanide collected.

Me neither, but thought I would throw a little info on cyanide collection in there as you really never know what has and hasn't been improperly collected.

Exactly what I was wondering...

Sorry for your loss. Petco sucks. Hey since we are talking about petco..heres a funny story.

I had been looking around for some local pom-pom xenia. I scope out all of the LFS's to no luck (well Seascapes had one but they said they wanted 75$ for one stalk *cough*) So anyway, I walk into petco and I see a decent size live rock with a small frag of pom-pom. I asked the guy how much it was and he said "We dont sell corals that size so it must be a hitchhiker. You can just have it if you buy the rock."

It was a decent rock so I said I would buy it. I went to go grab some frozen food from the freezer, came back and the Petco guy had taken the rock out of the water and was RUBBING the xenia frag with dirty thumb. I asked him what the hell he was doing, he said he had to get the frag off the rock to weigh it (like the .0006 oz of xenia would make a difference anyway) I told him to stop rubbing it and if he had to get it off to cut it off. He looked at me with a smug "I know more than you" look and said "Sir you cant CUT corals, they will die. You have to rub the foot to encourage them to detach. I told him I think you are confusing corals with anemones. So he replied "Man I have been doing this for over 6 months and I have a 55 gallon tank at home. I know what Im doing"

Needless to say I walked out =)
