I have had some bad luck as well,
chaulk it up to experiance, I set up a 75 gallon with a puffer ( dogface), lion and a eel.
a week ago they all stopped eating, multipal water checks and all seems well.
did water changes, running carbon. allwisr run a cheap coralife skimmer rated for 125 on puffer is a messy eater.
the other day I got a shock, did not untill I spilled water and knelled down. Grabbed the volt meter 117 volts to ground.

I was not running a titanium ground probe my fault.
lion fish layed on the bottom untill he died.

culpert was a cheap titanium heater.

sooo I drove a earth ground by the wall and hooked up a ground.

the eel finaly started to eat, puffer still hangs up by the return line
squints and just hovers there still not eating.

Sorry to hear.

Do you have GCFI outlets? If not you may be lucky there wasn't a fire. Realize you don't feel lucky at the moment.

Ground probe = bad idea with no GCFI, fish would have been shocked anyway. Granted you wouldn't have been.

Could you tell us what brand of heater .. Won bros? Pro Heat I or II?

The heater from catfish lighting I inspected it today,
It had a hole burned thue the case. Allowing water to come in contact with the wires.
This heater was 45.00 not dirt cheap, 500 watts.
unfortunatly I own 2. I inspected the second heater this evening
it was getting a hot spot under the holder. comes with 2 suction cup holders that cradle it if you slide then in too far and get the plastic clamp over the element it causes a hot spot.

I guess one should inspect their heaters now and then.
100.00 worth of fish went away with the element.
and yes I rewired a new outlet 20 amp GFI dedicated to the tank.
one more to go.
I was being cheap, and stupid, GFI, ground rod, only way to go.
Live and learn
