Today I came home to see my midas blenny dead on my floor. I was aware they were jumpers, but I had hoped for the best. I also thought that with my glass top on that there would be no way for him to get out. What causes them to jump? Do they get spooked? Water conditions? Impulse? Peer pressure?

Do all small fish such as basslets, gobies, etc. jump? Aside from eggcrate which imo looks bad is there any way to prevent this?

I found him in front of my tank. There is only a mm or two of space. In the back there is far more. I know he did not jump from the back of the tank to the floor in front of my tank. I guess he slipped through the front.

Could have gone out of the back.. flopped on the top.. fell out onto front of tank on floor?

I had one jump THROUGH eggcrate.

I have since gotten another one because I love them so much (mine is like pink with yellow highlights) and I put wedding veil material over the eggcrate and hot glue or use fishing line to tie it down in the proper places to securely cover all eggcrate holes

Do you have a picture of this contraption? I worry about the appearance and this cutting down on the lighting. I am also concerned about cooling the tank in the summer. Any thoughts?

Typically I use a fan. The contraption that Christie is talking about seems like it would affect the fansability to cool the water.

I want to go with the peer pressure idea ha-ha. I bought the egg crate and painted it black so it looks much more eye appealing.

Nice touch with the black paint. I like the idea. Christie said she had one jump with eggcrate. This concerns me.

Yeah it probably is. I mean.. a Midas blenny is certainly the right shape to fit through it but what're the odds they jump straight up like that?

I was a little concerned about the contraption I made but so far it is working and doesn't seem to diffuse the light any more than with just egg crate- here's some pics

Just eggcrate:

Eggcrate with Tulle? the wedding veil stuff over it:

I got a little sloppy on a corner like this where it is cut out to allow room for my heater or cords coming from things

Christie, what kind of lighting do you have? This may sound crazy, but I wonder if MH lighting might "melt" the tulle?

I am only running T5HOs and they are warm but not quite hot like MH are.

You would have to experiment with it- and perhaps over a piece of something that can't melt\catch fire so if it does melt it wouldn't go back into your tank.

I recently used hot glue to put a piece over an intake that had verticle slats on a tiny filter on a 10g tank and it warped it but didn't melt it so it is glued in place pretty well.

I don't know how the temperature of hot glue versus a few inches away from MH would be though
