ok i thought i was pretty informed, but last night while at a friends house i couldnt wait to see his ritteri anemone. i had seen it before and it was awesome. when i got to the tank i thought wow it shrunk some. but he said it had split into three on him. he gave one to a friend and still has the other third if you will. he has it in an anemone 150 gallon rubbermaid set up along with a very very large mertins he just got saturday. it must be 2.5 feet at least. anyway has anyone heard of ritteris splitting like that? i just think thats so cool.

There are thousands of clone fields alone here in thailand, in this areasit appears to be the most common form of reproduction/growth in these anemones.

Mine have split, but when they did I had one become two. Are you saying his original one split into a total of three?

Is my anemone in question. Happened while I was having some problems with my tank's chemistry = maybe stressed. It started with a hole from the mouth through the foot. I thought it was on its way out, but it stayed inflated the whole time. Then this new "ring of anemone" tore at one point into a long "string" of anemone. Some parts were thicker than others. These became the new H. mags. I ended up with a total of three smaller purple footed H. magnifica. You can see one at:

Yeah, mine did the same thing. I could see the live rock it was sitting on through the mouth. Then over the course of 12 hours or so it tore itself apart. Interestingly, my purple based one started to divide within the week. I don't know if the first cloning anemone released something into the water or if it was some environmental trigger. I am not aware that there was any type of stressor in my anemones' case. The first one to split had grown large and had been in my tank for 4 years when it split. There are a couple of pics in my gallery of the rock through the mouth of the anemone. When I've had BTA's split, they are eating in a few days. With H. mag it takes much longer before the mouth forms--several weeks at least.
