Anyone have any good experiences with them? Are they a lot harder to keep than BTA's? what's the expected life in the aquarium or the longest anyone has kept one?

I've had one (now it's two because it split a couple of years ago) for just over 7 years. There are a few RC members that have kept them longer than I have. They have a much poorer survival rate compared to BTAs. I would say your setup is fine for one. The problem is getting one that is healthy from the get-go. They often decline in the first couple of months.

I just lost one after about 8 months. It was, by far, the most sensitive animal I have ever kept.

At first it had problems adjusting to my lights. After about two weeks of discharging small amounts of zooxanthellae, it seemed to do well. Then it slowly continued to bleach while all other animals in the tank were fine. Including a green carpet anemone (haddoni) In a foolish effort to combat the bleaching I dosed the system with iodine. Over dosed actually. All other animals seemed unaffected, but the magnifica quickly regained its zooxanthellae and began having troubles with the lights again. I moved the mag to a different system with lower lighting. It withdrew and its mouth gaped. For about two weeks, I was sure it would die. Then it began to recover again. It started feeding and regaining mass. Then a mishap with the light company ended everything.

Here's the thread depicting the whole roller coaster ride.
