i am planning on doing a 90 gallon living rock-fish,with some soft and hard coral.i have well water that is set up with a 5 micron sediment filter along with a charcoal filter and a water softener system.this water is pretty clean.do i HAVE to have a ro/di system too?
You dont have to have it. You can buy ro/di water in wallmart or other places but own RO/DI unit is a good investment. IMO. I have one and I'm happy with it. Better than carry heavy buckets once a week from anywhere.
Do you have a TDS monitor? If so, what TDS reading are you getting? Have you tested for trace elements/coumpounds as well? (e.g., copper and other metals, phosphates, nitrates, silicates, plutonium, etc..?)
If not and you don't plan to, I'd get one anyway. I imagine (though others are better qualified to answer) that with good water quality your RO/DI will, at the least, last longer than those of us who get 300-500 TDS through tap.
Just ordered mine, 7 stage with UV sterilizer, I AM SICK OF BUYING 60 GAL A WEEK OF DISTILLED WATER! Cant wait, some pretty good deals on EBAY. No REEFER should be without one.
I bought a 100gpd unit from a LFS and love it. My water chemistry is excellent now, and I've plumbed it to my saltwater and freshwater reservoir tanks using two float switches I bought for $8 each. Going to plumb the freshwater for auto top-off once I finihs building my new sump also. Tanks are always full and all I have to do is remember to add salt when I use some for a water change.
