I just spoke with a rep at Marine Depot and was advised that the DI material may have dried out and that all is need is 24 hours for it to rehydrate.
I'll have to wait and see if that is the case. This morning I started the process and watch fas the TDS coming from the DI filter rose from 006 ppm to 036 ppm that after 5 minutes slowly began to fall back to 006 ppm.
When did you last calibrate your TDS meter? I wouldn’t trust most hobbyist level TDS meters to accurately be able to tell the difference between 0 and 1ppm.
Did you buy a pre-filled cartridge or refill a cartridge you already had? Sometimes you can get channelling in the DI resin if not properly compacted and filled.
There would be a mixture of ions/elements getting through. I would say the risk is extremely minimal at 5ppm. Unless you were actually never doing water changes and just topping off for years on end with 5ppm water. Tanks much more likely to die from a myriad of other problems that plague reef tanks.
