RO/DI questions

Does anyone run 2 DI cartridges in line or piggyback style? Is there added benefit in doing so or is it just a waste of money? I wanted to make sure I get the cleanest water possible and should the first DI cartridge fail, the second will clean up the water further.

Also, what's the best place to get addon DI housing, cartridges, and bulk DI resin for refills?

I ONLY use one at a time. And I buy mind on the Bay from the same people I got my setup from in Canada.
Not much help sorry. I only check TDS anyway. Spend money on the pre-filter .5 micron and duel carbon filters.

I run three =)

Anion
Cation
and Mixed bed.

Man I love my Neptune.

The advantage to 2 or three over 1 is twofold... you have alot more time to notice the post RO TDS is getting higher.

Also if you have really bad water like myself, you will be happy to have the extra couple of DI filters to ensure you absolutely have 0TDS water.

3??? :eek2:

So when it comes time to change out the cartridges, how do you know which one needs to be replaced or do you just automatically change all 3 at the same time?

Hey Kenny,

I need to order some di resin from resindepot. They only sell in cubic foot lots for $200, wanna split one with me? They said it fills 35 di cartridges.

I run two inline, it's not a waste of money because if the first one is putting out 0tds the second one is not being used. It adds some extra time for us forgetful reefers =)

I use the 10" refillable filter housings which can bought from airwaterice or aquariumwaterfilters.com. The inline ones from filterdirect work as well but I don't like them as much.

My filter is a 8 stage: 2 micro prefilters, 3 carbon filters, RO membrane, 2 X 10" DI. When I do filter changes I just throw out the first filter in the line and move the others up one spot. This way the new one has to do the least work and is more of a polishing step.

This works like a charm-my ro membrane is two and a half years old and still takes 400+ ppm down to 20ppm! I put a new one on to test (different brand) and it could only do 30ppm so I really like the filterdirect membrane.

Let me know if you want to split that resin =)

have you bought your setup yet? I spent quite a bit of time researching which one to get and after countless hours of browsing these forums, came to the conclusion that the typhoon III was the best choice for me.

I already have a system. Forgot where I got it from, but it's definitely quality built. I was just thinking about adding another DI to it, that's all.

If your tap water is more then 500 TDS.
More carbon is the best and cheaps way to go.
I run one per-filter and 3 carbon then the RO unit with a final thru the DI unit.
Maybe 1 or 2 on a really bad day on the old TDS meter.
Just my opinion.

Charles,

I am game for the resin. That's cheaper than anything else I have found so far. Most places sell the resin for $10/refill. The resindepot resin is <$6/refill.

Man, you have a seriously heavy duty system. Mine is just the basic 4 stages. But then again, the water here in Upland is really clean, usually <150 ppm. Unless both of my TDS meters are kaput :D

I run two refillable mixed resin DI cartridges in series post RO. I figure I can go longer before changing out the resin.
Does anyone know which grade of resin at ResinDepot is suitable for our needs?

yeah- the resin depot brand mixed with free freight =)

Cool man, they have the 10" refillable shells for $18 but that is twice what airwaterice charges ($8). I can grab a couple for you from RD if you want =)

YGPM =)

Thanks, they have quit a few grades...wasn't sure which one.
Anybody in the glendale/burbank/pasadena area want to split an order?:D

If you want more than one DI try meaking them impurity specific.
Example:
If your water is treated with chloramine and has high CO2 content which will exaust the resin very quickly start with one stron Anion resin only cartrisge to remove the CO2 then follow by a cartridge designed to remove Ammonia and finish with a cartridge more suitable for removing traces of Silicates and phosphates.

You could also use a cheaper resin in the first cartridge and then use a cartridge that has better grade resins that will take your water from the ppb traces levels to absolute 18 megohm water.
