RO/DI Silicate Removal

Hey Guys,

I've been fighting an ongoing problem with diatoms for the last 2 months. The problem was caused due to an expired DI cartridge due to which source water with 1ppm silicate was used as top off.

In any case, despite repeated 10-20%water changes, the problem hasn't subsided. Tank in question is a 260g reef.

I was wondering if I could use a Spectrapure Silica Removal cartridge directly plumbed into the tank? or can this only be used with fresh water? I'm aware that after this experiment, the cartridge will have to be disposed off.

Guess my final question would be, if this works with saltwater or if there is any danger of any leaching of the resins?

Thanks

Thats probable, but i'm guessing its likely that the silicate would be removed by then.

Just don't wanna poison the reef

just use alumina based phos remover media, [the white stuff] it pulls silicates out quickly

Thanks, GFO doesn't really work, have tried.

If i were to use alumina based phos remover, is there any chance of danger to the reef?

If I was in your shoes I would just drop a little money on a new Spectrapure Maxcap setup and be done with it. I used two other RO/DI systems for years and fought blooms as well. When I changed to Spectrapure all my algae and blooms went away.

thanks hammerhead,

To be honest, I skimped a bit in the beginning with a cheapish RO/DI unit, with crappy DI cartridges.

I'm now using the same unit, with a booster pump and have changed the cartridges to Spectrapure Maxcap and Silicabuster, 0 silicates. I now know that my top off is good.

But removing the existing silicates is where the problem lies... Tank size makes large water changes very annoying

Well, looks like thats gonna be it....

Thanks.... now i'll just have to order and wait it out
