RO/DI unit questions

the search function doesnt seem to be working for me.

im looking for a RO DI unit. what makes one better than another?


i saw some on ebay that are "portable", ie i dont have to hard pipe it; i can use a spiggot or hook it up to a sink. i was looking for one thats along those lines. im totally clueless when it comes to these so any help is greatly appreciated

I don't have one but have read that most of them don't have to be hard plumbed, they just hook up to a regular garden hose type conector.

The more stages the filter has, the better it is going to be, RO is one type of filtration on most of them and the DI is another that must be hooked up also. A pre filter on it will lengthen the life of the expencive RO/DI filter replacements.

The number of stages is a sales gimmick, its what is in the stages that counts. You need 4 stages total for a good RO/DI system.
1st Stage- A high quality prefilter in the 0.2 to 1.0 micron range
2nd Stage- A high quality solid carbon block like a 0.5 micron Chlorine Guzzler
3rd Stage- a Dow Filmtec 75 GPD RO membrane with a matched flow restrictor, no substitutes.
4th Stage - A standard sized vertical 10" canister with a 24 oz refillable DI cartrdige.
Thats all you need. Other things make life much easier and let you know when to change DI resin and filters like a pressure gauge or two, a TDS meter, an autoshutoff valve, a DI bypass valve etc,
