Ro/Di unit questions

Well my brother( I could tell when he seen his first reef tank he was hooked) hes taking the plunge and getting into the hobby. He is wanting to get a Ro system but I cannot offer an opinion. I currently have a kinetico whole house system with no di filter, which I don't know if its affecting my tank or not. What does everyone have for a system and do you like it? do you have to run a auto shut off valve on them, or how do you fill jugs or whatever you hold water in? Mine has a three gallon bladder tank that I empty out of, didn't know if the "Fish Catalog" systems had them or not? I'm clueless!

On mine, not sure of the make and model, I don't use a shutoff, but I want to. I just don't have the room to have a big holding container. I start mine up running a few gallons of straight RO, which I make into drinking and cooking water. Then I start making my DI water. I fill up all of my jugs, but with it being cold, it takes about 2 days to make all of my jugs full.

If he has the room, I would suggest getting a holding container so he can have 40 + gallons on standby.

As far as the rest of the units go, I don't see where there is a big difference between the systems except the quality of the filters it comes with and the membrane. 75gpd is supposed to be the mose effecient.

I use a trash can for mine. I turn mine on and off by hand. Kinda of a pain but atleast I wont be away from home when the shut off valve decides to fail. Would like to run one but just cant bring myself to it right now. I cant afford to have a flood in my house.LOL

I do the same as JCR. My RO/DI unit is mounted in my utility room directly above a Brute trashcan which I use to hold the water. I use the oven timer to make sure I never forget about the unit being on. So far I have only flooded the utility twice and it was only about 2 gallons so no big deal. As far as brands go I really like the The Filter Guys (http://www.thefilterguys.biz/ro_di_systems.htm).

I got mine online from

It works great and I have never had a problem. It is mounted beside my utility sink in the garage and is hooked to the tap with a y hose adapter. I run the waste down the drain and the ro/di water into a bunch of 5g jugs that I empty into my mixing garbage can or top off.
