RO/DI Units. Choices??

Co2?!?!?!?

When water and Co2 get together, they form carbonic acid, and when introduced with copper (Read, Pipes) it creates some pretty toxic stuff that can make you very sick...
So if you had Co2 in your water and that water went into the house which is usually made of copper pipes, I think it would erode the pipes and make some very poisonous water?

I studied this somewhat when I made my soda machine...

http://www.boneville.net/soda/install_setup.htm
"When carbon dioxide enters water, it becomes carbonic acid. That acid will react with copper or the copper in an alloy and produce toxic compounds. These compounds taste very bad, and can cause nausea, vomiting, and other similar problems. "

I think pretty much every water source has some level of dissolved CO2 / carbonic acid in it. From what I understood from Spectrapure, it is very low (insignificant) in most places, except well water. There are online calculators where you can calculate the ppm of dissolved CO2 in your tap water using pH and carbonate alkalinity. My well water comes out of the tap with a pH around 6.4 and somewhere around 40-60ppm dissolved CO2. And yes, it would be corrosive, and I was using my straight well water out of the pipes and got a copper buildup in my tank. Go figure. And hence, the purchase of a RODI unit to clean up my water (coffee made with RODI water sure tastes a lot better too :D ).
Anyway, I don't mean to ramble aimlessly once again, but just something to be aware of if one is going to purchase a RODI unit for cleaning up well water.

Jeff remind me not to ask for a glass of water at your house:)

I might take you up on coming over and looking at it!

Me and decision making. I'm the worst my wife will vouch for me!

I go back and forth There are really 4 or so units I'm thinking about.

Max Cap
Typhoon III
Filter guys Ocean +1
Melev

Probably in that order also.

I just keep asking myself is the max cap for the Extra $100+ dollars or will any of the otehrs do just as good?

Yeah i have heard people like there Ebay ones. But what about customer service for them? Also do they come with an Inline TDS meter? that is a must for me.

Starting to like that Filterguys Ocean Reef +1 system it has Dual TDS meters and Is $199.

Mikey does Melevs system come with TDS meter, I looked on his site and didnt see one.

I have heard Excellent things about FIlterguys and Spectrapures Customer service.

With something i know so very little about i will pay the extra for great customer service

Any other opinions?

I also have the RODI Spectrapure, and haven't had any problems with it at all. I got mine before they had the Maxcap and ordered the 25G/day model which is exactly like the Maxcap but only runs 25G/day and had a single inline TDS meter. But it must have been when they were getting ready to release the Maxcap as they sent me a dual inline TDS at no extra charge.

If I had to do it over again, I would order a model that makes more than 25G/day of RODI water. Here's a question for the group, If I replace the RO membrane with one that makes more RODI water, will that work? I know that there is a little plastic flow regulator as well, can that be mod'ed?

Also, a problem that I have here in Woodland, is pressure. We are on a well system, and my pressure just barely gets to 40psi, and occasionally drops down to 36 - 38psi. I've considered buying the booster pump, but it's not cheap, so I haven't yet done it. What kinds of psi readings is everyone else getting?

If it is your own well, you can adjust the cut-in and cut-out pressure right at the pressure switch.

I should have been more specific, these are city wells. But thanks for the info Jeff. It would be nice if the city could boost the psi, but I'm sure that might not be so easy.

I just got my Typhoon III Extreme from AWI and this thing is sweet it says it will do 150 gpd. I tested the "Pure Water" and ive got 0 TDS it has an inline TDS meter that does the incoming tap and outgoing product water. Plus it comes with a handheld TDS meter for testing tap water. It also has a high TDS alarm on the DI cartridge that tells me when the DI is allowing dirtier water through. I seriously think im in love. LOL

Emailed the filter guys and he said this You might want to take a look on line at your water quality report
on your city gov page for disinfectant and see if you have chloramine.

How do i do that anyone know? I live in Loomis and water company is PCWA

I don't think you received an answer on this yet.

Yes, that is correct.

Just replace the RO membrane (with one made in USA) and the flow regulator on the waste line and you've changed your 25GPD to 100GPD.

Sounds nice.

can i ask how much it cost with the group buy?

We could only drum up 2 people to do the buy so we only recieved a 5% discount. But with shipping and a "Y" adapter for a hose that was extra it was $280.36 delivered.

Thanks for answering my question about the RO membrane Bristlew0rm.

Still curious what psi's everyone has, 40psi seems low to me, but am curious what others are getting.

I bought one from John also and it has been working fine for the last 4 mo. I got one of the dual inline meters but plumbed it to show the output of the membrane and di - I know what the input water quality is (fairly stable 40-50ppm) but this way I can tell when the membrane needs cleaning/replaced. Right now I am getting 0ppm out of the membrane (I tested with another meter to verify).

Some people are willing to pay a little more for
"one word"; QUALITY
:)

My pressure here is about 40-60 depending on what time of day it is.
Between 5:00AM and 7:00AM the pressure is like 40 (People taking showers, early morning sprinklers, flushing of many toilets, etc)
Then goes back up to 60
Then at about 4:00 to 7:00 it drops down to 50, as people get home from work, make dinner, wash disher, laundry, etc..
Then jumps back to 60 again

Ok,

Well I'm about 99.1% sure i will be getting the Filter guys Ocean reef + 1:)

Did you end up going with the filter guys? I was on the edge with them and AWI...
