Ok gang.. its time for me to bite the bullet and go for an RO-DI.

Being of Scottish decent, I want something good but CHEAP!

So tell me all the details, do I need 4 stage? 5 stage? Can I just us DI only? What do I need to look for? What should I stay away from?

I like the Typhoon III. I have had mine now for a few months I guess and it really couldn't be easier to operate or install. It comes with everything you need to get going including water line connections and the meter for measuring remaining particals in your RO/DI water. The unit runs about $200. I also recommend getting the float valve auto shut off for an additional $14.00. I think the web site is www.airwaterice.com.

I have the Typhoon III also and like it. Read somewhere on the forum if you tell them you are a RC member the float valve is free.
TDS went from 265 to 0 using the free TDS meter that comes with the RO/DI. Bought the 75GPD version.

RO/DI is one of those purchases where Good and Cheap cannot be put in the same sentence.
Look at both the vendors already mentioned plus www.purelyh2o.com , www.thewaterguys.biz and www.melevsreef.com . All build very good units that will not break the bank while giving you excellent water quality.
With any unit, look for things like a Dow Filmtec 75 GPD RO membrane, standard size 10" canister with a refillable DI cartridge, auto shutoff valve, TDS meter, Pressure gauge and assembled already. Ask about customer service and technical support and if they won't provide any of the above or cannot tell you who makes their membranes or other components, shop somewhere else.

I bought my 100gpd from Melev and like it a lot (I bought one for my company's tank too). Air Water & Ice get rave reviews. There are several ebay ro/di units that are very good as well.

My only advice before getting the ro/di is checking to see if there is enough water pressure first before buying the unit. Many people in apartment buildings or homes with the pressure regulater installed find out "after" they have purchased a $100+ unit they needed to buy a booster pump to increase the water pressure.

raddogz, that is exactly why I recommend the 75 GPD Dow Filmtec membrane. It is designed to operate efficiently at 50 psi. GE Water and Applied Membranes require 60 to 65 psi to produce the same water.
Again,
ALWAYS get a 75 GPD Dow Filmtec RO membrane only ig given a choice.
