RO question

OK so I was wondering what good would it be to have a Carbon filter on a unit after the RO membrane?

Or is it pointless?

My understanding is that on some units it is very important to have one before the RO membrane as the membrane can be damaged by chlorine that is in the water. A carbon filter after the membrane seems like you said pointless. My unit has a DI unit after the membrane and that does provide for additional removal of "Dissolved solids".

I am looking at this one online its a portable unit, and it has the carbon on the unit one before RO and one after. I guess it would be an extra carbon filter when i need changing.
4 stage portable

I was under the understanding that the carbon (GAC) after the unit does the final polishing of the water.. the membrane removes the "larger" particulates mechanically while the DI removes the remaining solids chemically.. whatever is left gets picked up by the GAC..

FWIW, don't get the 100 gpd.. you'll get way better results with the 75 gpd membrane.

that person only has 100gpd membranes And I dont have the $$$ to get a nice 200 system.

Going to the water store is starting to be a PIA.

After reading the description closer, it says it only has a 5 micron sediment filter.. be careful with this unit if your tap water quality is on the medium to low side.. the life of the membrane will greatly be reduced if it is being fed dirty water..

as an example, this setup does 1 micron, then .6 micron.. the cleaner the water is before reaching the membrane, the longer it will last.. a good membrane will run you from $40-$60 itself.

Tough call.. my TDS in Rocklin is 38.. and i have the Typhoon system.. used it for over 1.5 years and my DI resin still hasn't changed color.

edit: How much does it cost your to go down to the store to buy distilled water a week? Take that figure and multiply by 6 months (assuming the ebay unit only lasts that long).. see how close it comes to the different in price.

For me it was almost $1 per gallon and i had to fill at 160g tank + 55g sump.. no brainer there.

the cost wise is about the same...

20 gallons for my main tank and refug

and my 12g nano which im doing 3-5 gallons

At that rate its every 2 weeks which Is leaving alot of room for evaporated water.

So I should be doing it weekly, but every 2 weeks at 25gallons X.30¢ X 6 months = 90

thats not including the lugging I have to do with the bottles on multiple trips because I only have 3 5g water bottles.

Also I have a 30g FW that could use the RO water.so there another 10 gallons....

So time and cost wise it will save me for sure.

Get a Typhoon III I love mine.
If you want to drop off your bottels I would be glad to fill them up for ya for free. Granted you would still have to do the driving and the lugging.

its all about $$$$$$

John at your reef use's a 5 stage from the same company and he loves his, has one at home and at the shop.

Ill be getting the 5 stage system.

I have one after my DI and I think the extra carbon filter is for taste. Not sure how it adds flavor, but it doesn't add anything measureable on my TDS. I would get it if you're planning on using this thing for drinking water, although it may not make much difference. Of course you could always put both carbon filters before the RO. My system has 3 carbon prefilters. I would also add an extra storage container or two if you're not connecting this thing directly to your top off container. You may also want to invest in a float valve if your going straight to your top-off. It's a pain to wait for these things to fill up, and if you forget it's a real mess.

I suggest you get a system with an additional DI filter, and you'll need a TDS meter to measure how well your filter is working, so you know when to replace the filters.

Pass on it.. for ~$30 and the fact you have to replace the membrane would make the setup around $80 for just RO..
