RO system recommendations

Well...I have money burning a hole in my pocket and desperately need an RO/DI system.

Suggestions? I want >100 gpd (preferably bigger) and I want it to get that TDS down to 0 easily.

What are your suggestions? Links? I might actually click on them this time.

Heard great things about this one. Im looking at getting it myself.

ok it wont let me post the link... its from air water ice dot com and its the typhoon 3 ro/di unit

I've heard good things about that one too (typhoon). There's also a good one from Spectrapure called the Maxcap (you can chose 90 or 150 gpd). It's about $50 more, but it comes standard with a 4-point TDS setup so you can monitor the water as it is filtered through the system. The cartridges are supposed to last a long time compared to others as well, especially the 2 DI ones, so that could save in the long-run.

I used to have a Typhoon II I think (maybe 3?). Very nice unit, very well put together, and excellent customer service (Walter seems like a good guy). I currently have an Ebay special for $92...and although the DI chamber is a bit smaller, for all intents and purposes it's more or less the same.

That said, you may want to check out www.dirt-cheap-ro.com and give Randall there an email. From past experience (I got my replacement cartridges from him) his prices can't be beat, and he can likely put something together for you, custom made, at a top notch price.

I got mine from "Water General" off ebay. It had clear filter canisters so you can see the filters' condition plus dual clear di chambers which I run vertically. The water perks up through one chamber and down the other, or vice versa. this avoids water channeling and I highly recommend doing it this way.

I have a Kent Maxima HI S RO/DI. It has been a nice unit and I have been very pleased with it. The membrane has lasted close to 5 years using a flush valve. That being said you can probably get something a little cheaper that is just as good.

Where does everybody get their replacement cartridges? I normally use the Kent stuff but after looking around it seems like replacements can be had much cheaper with the use of refilable DI cartridges etc... Any experience with Purely H2O that's advertising here on RC?

Figured that hijack wouldn't be too bad since it's related:rolleyes:

thanks, Chris

Yeah, I have the Kent Maxxima HI-S RO/DI too... I like it... Always put out 2 or less on my TDS meter... Which reminds me... I need some calibration fluid my dear... ;)

Ok ok...I'll try to make those up this week. Call me later in the week and remind me though!

H@rry (NARC) said that his membrane in his Spectrapure unit lasted more than 5 years, too. I don't know if his unit has a flush valve or not. I have not added a back flush valve kit since someone on RC said that it would not extend the life all that long, but 5 years is a long time.

How often do you guys change sediment and carbon block filters? I believe that this also has a bearing on the life of an RO membrane.

I had to replace my RO membrane after one year (a Water General's unit). I did not change the sediment and carbon block filters for a year and that may been the reason for such a short life on my membrane. Someone in NARC said that he usually changed the whole thing out after one year because he did not want to take his unit apart but once a year and that the overall cost are not all that different.

No flush valve.

I have what I think is the equivelant of a TDS that came with my unit. It checks the water between the two DI cartridges with a green light/red light. They usually last a little less than a year and when I order new ones I always replace the sediment and charcoal filters too. You can remove one DI cartridge and change the dip switch setting on the tester to test the membrane and I check it each time as well. It has never checked "bad" although it doesn't check as good as when it was newer. It's been running since 2000.

I did the water general ebay unit and loved it for the price but had to change my membrane in about 8 months. I added a second DI chamber to extend the maintenance on it longer also. I did run tons of water in that time but was disapointed my membrane went bad so fast. The prefilters that came in the unit seemed to let tons of junk through when I opened up the membrane chamber. I also back flushed it regular. A lower GPD such as a 75 ( I now have, had a 120??) is better I have been told and will last longer FWIW. My auto shutoff valve was bad also and had to be replaced...Sometimes $50 more on the front end is worth it in this hobby for less headach in the long run.....Lots of choices out there though!

Angela I also had a problem with my first membrane but found out later you need to keep it wet at all times and I used a loop in my out to keep water on it and now it is fine

I am not sure I follow you... Did you just hook it up when you needed to run water? I have mine running 24/7. Its hooked into the house water for drinking so it is going at least a gallon or so a day. Good info though!

yes I only turn mine on when I need it and I found if you loop the hose higher than the membrane then water always stays in the membrane they said if you let it get dry it will kill it
