RO System

I am looking into RO Systems and I'm hoping to find one that's $200 or less. I have a 175 gallon bowfront aquarium and my old RO system produces like 15 gallons in a day. I'm looking for a way to increase the number of gallons in a short peroid of time so water changes and such will be much easier. Any suggestions? If you could, send me a link of a product you suggest.

Thanks,
Mark

a pump will help it produce the correct amount of water that is advertised on the unit as you probably have low pressure .can you check the pressure .
allset is also correct but if you have low pressure you will still be under the rate of the unit ans have excess waste water too .

Is your RO/DI actually rated for 15GPD, or is that just what it's producing? The water pressure going into your unit has a major effect on the end result. Sometimes if you have issues with low pressure, buying a booster pump will greatly increase the amount of 'good' water your system produces.

An RO/DI isn't a cheap piece of equipment, so I'm just trying to throw some suggestions out there to help. If you do in fact need to purchase a new filter, I highly recommend buying a Spectrapure. The customer service I have recieved from them (both over the phone and via PM on ReefCentral) has been nothing short of outstanding. They have been in this business for a very long time and I can understand why. JMO, hope this helps! :)

Mark - can you tell me more about your system? It may be that all you need is a differnt RO membrane - that is - there may be no need to get an entirely new system.

membrane is cheaper than a new unit for sure . do you have a way to check the input pressure as that would reall tell you what you are up against even if you need a new membrane .

I upgraded the membrane on my RODi unit some time ago (originally 24gpd). Ordered the membrane from Buckeye Field Supply. Just make sure to adjust/replace your flow regulator thingy so that proper pressure reaches the membrane.

I'm away from home right now so I don't know much else about my RO system. I think I have about 2 of them laying around somewhere. Tell me more about upgrading the membrane, restrictor and booster pump. I'm not quite familiar with those and not sure how the connection work. Would it be good idea to connect the RO filter to a garden hose from the outside well water? Thanks alot for helping me out!

Mark

Upgrading to a higher capacity membrane is about a 2 minute exercise - remove the old membrane and flow restrictor - slip the new ones in, and you are done. Very quick and easy.

Flow restrictors are nothing but a partial plug in the waste water tube. We can help you find it if you go to replace it.

You can get feedwater to your system a 100 different ways - via a garden hose ending in a hose bib adapter will work well.

3 Questions:

1. Is the flow restrictor inside the membrane housing? I can't see any obvious restrictor in the lines coming out of the RO housing.
2. Why is TDS measured after the RO unit but before the DI cartridge?
3. Will a Buckeye 100 gpd membrane fit a Aqua FX Barracuda unit?

Thanks

It is likely INSIDE the waste water tube where the tube attaches to the fitting at the RO housing. It may also be built in to that elbow fitting.

2. Why is TDS measured after the RO unit but before the DI cartridge?

You want to read in 3 places - tap water, ro water, and di water. That way you know how well your membrane is cleaning the tap water, and how dirty the water is being delivered to the DI, and how well the DI is working.

3. Will a Buckeye 100 gpd membrane fit a Aqua FX Barracuda unit?
Yep - perfectly.

RO water

RO water

Thanks for the above answers.

1. What should I be getting for TDS coming out of the RO membrane before the DI cartridge?
2. What should I be getting for TDS final filtered water?

Thanks
