RO vs RODI

We will soon be purchasing a new 125 gal aquium. We are on well water. Do we need an RO or would a RODI be better? Also are the ones available at a hardware store as good as one bought from a salt water shop?

RO/DI would be better, the deionizer is a final polisher that removes trace ions that are small enough to pass through the RO membrane.

Your best bet would be to research various threads on RC for recommendations and when ready do your shopping from the comfort of your computer chair, LFS will charge a premium, and units at the hardware store are intended for drinking water, so do not need the ultra-high purity capability you are looking for.

Generally the systems available at hardware stores and the like are drinking water systems not well suited to aquarium use. They often have low capacity membranes (e.g., 25 gpd) and you'll never find a drinking water system with a DI stage.

Unlikely it will have a pressure gauge or thermometer, nor clear housings. Unlikely they will sell tds meters and the like.

RO/DI no question is better. Get a TDS meter and check out the difference between RO and then RO/DI. There is no substitute. ;)
