Well I didn't really think about it, but the styrofoam has a tinfoil reflective material on it, should I take it off or paint it black? It might be a good thing to reflect the light from the bottom?

I used black starboard in my tank. I wouldn't try peeling anything off because you might damage the foam and you want it as smooth and flat as possible. If you're using sand, I wouldn't bother. If going bare bottom or super thin sand, I'd just spray paint the foam.

I will probably use starboard as well, did you get 1" or 1/2" and where did you get black?
 
Bought me a fixture, it's bad azz!! Going back to MH for my new build and will supplement with a 160we.

Nice light, you can also use PVC sheet bought at many of the local acrylic shops. When i was debating going bare bottom that's what i looked at.

There has been a fair number of issues with starboard leeching stuff lately just a FYI. PVC we know if safe.
