Rock Anemone

Im such a total newb with this aspect, but went to local frag swap yesterday and bought my first anemone, I really didnt want to invest in a BTA yet, so I got a Rock Anemone, is it possible that perculas will host this anemone or do i need to trade "up"? If so what are the recommended animals that will host it......also trying to develop feeding schedule, what can I feed it and how often....from my reading I have been seeing 11/2 shrimp every other day.....is this enough/ too much?

They are very hardy, though nothing will host in them, they are far too small. Feed them once or twice a week if you dont want too many in the long run, any chopped meaty items will do, shrimp, krill etc. Mine even eat flake.

Likely hosts in Rock Anemones would shrimp and porcelain crabs.

The following genus would be a good target shrimp species: Periclimenes sp.

Good luck

Thats sad new but still a great addition to tank, with that being said......What anemone would be a good starter, for a softy reef, preferably something really hardy and easy to care for, that doesnt move too much.

Let me add to this that a clown will be happy to live with....

. It doesnt exist! Anemones will only move if they feel compelled to do so by an environmental or chemical irritant, they are classed as sessile invertebrates but if they are not happy with their location they will walk or even inflate and go for a ride on the current. (Very scary if you have pumps or powerheads unscreened!).

Well, to start off, most people would recommend a Bubble Tip Anemone (BTA) as they require the least lighting intensity of all the clown hosting anemones. Water parameters need to be good. No nitrites or ammonia and NO3 below 10ppm max IMO. Check out the anemone FAQ page at the top of this forum for info about BTA placement and getting them to sta in the location you wish!

With careful monitoring of the water parameters and dedicated care, ensuring stability of salinity, pH, temperature, adequate alkalinity and a low dissolved organic load, a BTA should thrive in your system provided you have moderate lighting employed. It should be noted that the natural host of Entacmaea quadricolor the Bubble tip anemone is the maroon clown, a notably aggresive species which requires a tank of at least 30 gallons.

Best of luck!

Ciaran.
