Rock in Hospital tank.

I just setup a hospital tank to treat ick with hyposalinity. I'm worried about lack of biofiltration. I want ro throw some of my DT's rock in therento help. Iwill rock still help filter in hyposalinity?

Leave the rock out of the rock out. If you are worried about bio filteration then place the filter out of your sick tank in your DT for a few hours then put the filter in the sick tank. Live rock will absorb medications and its best just to leave it out not to mention that if its a hypo sick tank anything invert wise thats on the rock will be killed.

The die off on the rock may counteract the biofiltration that the surviving bacteria would provide. You would likely lose any macroscopic life and possibly a lot of microscopic as well.

Using established media from your DT is a good idea, but putting anything that has been in your quarantine into the DT is a very bad idea as it may spread any disease in your quarantine to your DT. If you don't have any established media in your DT already, you would be better off placing a new filter pad in your DT in an area with some flow for 24 hours and then moving it to your treatment tank.

I like to use a HOB filter with a sponge in it. I seed the sponge in my main's display for a week or two until im ready to use the QT. Once the qt period is up I ditch the sponge and replace it with another. Keeping a small sponge in your sump is a nice idea in case you have an emergency situation

Thanks for the tips!!!! I grabed a new sponge for an old aquaclear hob filter. I'll toss it in the dt now for a day then transfer to the hos tank. Also I think daily watr changes will be needed until I'm comfortable with the setup. Damn ick man!!! Learned my leasson!!!!

You should be worried about the lack of nitrification in QT, but in general you should not put mature LR into QT. Either hypo or copper will kill many inverts lives on the LR and polute the water in QT. Exception is when the LR is still rather new but is just cycled; and even then if you used copper it will deposit on the LR.

Hypo gradually achieved or copper should not have a major impact on nitrification bacteria.

The lesson is that one should QT in advance and plan and cycle the medium intended for QT in advance.

The medium for QT should be cycled very well in advance. Use the seed and waste method and not any gradual method to cycle.

If you do not QT and wait for ick to attack when you are not prepared, you will be in a bad situation, as you are now in.

If you cycle now in a separate container the medium intended to be transferred to QT , you may need to change water in QT for only about three weeks after the cycle is done, not eight weeks.

BTW, LR is not a good medium of filtration in QT. In QT, you don't need denitrification or other comprehensive microbial balance, just nitrification. LR is too bulky in QT, IMO.
